PLANNING:
Topic: Photosynthesis Time: 45 min. Class: 5th grade Science Content Standards addressed:
State Standards: SPI 0507.3.1 Identify photosynthesis as the food manufacturing process in plants.
National Standards: For ecosystems, the major source of energy is sunlight. Energy entering ecosystems as sunlight is transferred by producers into chemical energy through photosynthesis. That energy then passes from organism to organism in food webs. http://soil.gsfc.nasa.gov/state/nation.htm#natscied
Technology Standards addressed:
3. Research and Information Fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks d. Process data and report results
Materials: 1. Videos, Textbook, Dictionary, Encyclopedia, Paper, Pencil, Computer Access (to view tutorial) Objectives: 1. TSW be able to select the Blooms Taxonomy: Analysis Assessment: Multiple Choice: Select all of the components of photosynthesis from the list below. Summarize Photosynthesis in your own words. Draw a diagram of the Place the pieces of the image in the correct spots in order to correctly show the steps to photosynthesis.

TEACHING:
Motivation: Beginning Attention Getter: o Ok. Lets all have a contest to see how long we can all hold our breaths. Ok everyone hold your nose so you dont cheatare you readyget setgo! o Discussion: What is it that youre not getting when you hold your breath? - air or oxygen Does anyone know where oxygen comes from? trees and plants Motivation will be maintained by various practice activities throughout the tutorial .
Teacher Procedures: Prior to the Computer 1. Explain that the days lesson will cover the process of Photosynthesis. The process in which plants produce energy necessary for life, and release oxygen which we need to breathe. This also starts the energy transfer chain known as the Food Chain. 2. Explain the instructions for the day o First, find the definitions from your text book and copy them on a notes page to take to the computer with you. o Second, go to the computer and complete the tutorial on photosynthesis o Lastly, pick up a copy of the quiz, return to your seat and complete the quiz. At the Computer 1. Monitor the Class 2. Answer Questions 3. After the Computer 1. Give out Quiz to those who finish the Tutorial 2. Monitor the Classroom
Student Procedures: 3. Write the following definitions down in your Note page
o o o o o o o
1. 2.
1. Complete the Quiz 2. Write in Science Journal about how photosynthesis affects your life.
Reflection & Transfer: After completing the quiz, students will have to write in their science journals about how they think photosynthesis has an effect on their life. This will cause them to think about other science lessons like the food chain and how their body produces energy. Resources:

I wasnt sure what kind of Rubric to provide since they werent really creating any kind of pro duct to be graded. The Tutorial had opportunity to practice the content and the actual grade would come from an in class quiz after the tutorial. The rubric I am providing is more of a behavioral rubric. 2. How would you improve your project? I would use a better program to create the practice exercises. The clicking the right answers is too difficult in PowerPoint.
3. What did you learn from creating this project (not about software), and how can you use what you learned in the future?
I learned that it is very important to add Assessment to the Analysis stage. It makes it very difficult to work in effective assessment into a program that doesnt like what you are trying to do. When you add assessment to the initial process of analyzing the learners and the content then you can have a better understanding of where to take the lesson and that will help to avoid any of the more difficult issues.
