About the Speakers


Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd. Zain Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Zain has pioneered research on the Malaysian ionosphere and geomagnetic field. He read for his B. Eng.(Hons) in Electronic Engineering and M. Eng. (Microwave Communication Engineering) at the University of Sheffield, U.K. in 1979 and 1981 respectively. He did his doctoral studies in Electrical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, USA, and graduated in 1990. He was involved in the HiPAS (predecessor ro HAARP) ionospheric modification experiments at Fairbanks, Alaska. Prof. Faizal founded the Centre for Wireless and Radio Science (WARAS) at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in 2004 and he was the Head of WARAS Centre and has served as the Dean of Centre for Graduate Studies at Universiti Tun Hussien Onn Malaysia (2003-2008), Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Tun Hussien Onn Malaysia (2001-2003), Head of Department of Electrical, Electronic and Systems Engineering, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (2000-2001/1995), Vice Presidents of TSI TelSys Corporation, Canada, and TSI Technologies, USA (1996-1997), Vice President of Abrar Group International (1995-1997) and Vice President of TelSys Inc USA (1995-1997). Prof. Faizal is a registered professional engineer, a fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, and a senior member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. He is an Associate Principal Fellow at Institute of Space Science (ANGKASA) UKM and he is currently with Universiti Malaysia Pahang. Prof. Dr. Sharifah Mastura Syed Abdullah Prof. Dr. Sharifah Mastura Syed Abdullah was born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia in 1950. She received the B.A.(Hons) (Geography) degrees from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 1974, She received her M.Sc. in Geomorphology from University of Sheffield, UK in 1976. She did her doctoral studies in Geomorphology at University of Southampton, UK and graduated in 1983. She is currently the Director of Institute of Climate Change and a professor in the School of Social, Development and Environmental Studies National University of Malaysia (UKM). Her current research interests and areas include hydro geomorphology and application of Remote Sensing and GIS. Prof. Sharifah is a member of Malaysia Singapore Joint Committee on Environment, an Associate Principal Fellow of the Institute of Space Science (ANGKASA) UKM, a panel member of MQA Assessment and a Panel Member for Appeal Board Environmental Quality Act 1974.
