NYS Grades 9-12 Text Selections

These modules include authentic reading materials. Authentic reading materials include published works that are typically encountered by students in daily life, such as in magazines, books or newspapers. The use of authentic reading material may mean that some material is emotionally charged or may use language outside of a student's particular cultural experience. As always, curriculum decisions are made at the local level.

The following is an update to the NYS Grades 9-12 document that hyperlinks the Text Selections from multiple sources online. In general, the selections not linked represent books currently in print. Highlighted selections are ones that also appear in Appendix B: Text Exemplars from the Common Core State Standards. If there are any questions about the links, broken links, additional resources, or better resources than what is included here, please email me at mikefisher821@gmail.com and I will make the necessary updates/changes. Note that this was done of my own volition and does not represent the NY State Ed Department or Odell Education and their intentions for accessing these texts.
Some notes on the hyperlinks: Please preview the links before giving them to students. Some of the sites have advertising and while I didnt notice anythin g inappropriate, the ads could be a distraction or a diversion. In all instances, I looked for the most credible websites for resources, including schools, universities, and user-supported sites. If you find a better resource or question my inclusion, please email me. The Gutenberg archive is heavily used here as the resources there are included in multiple e-formats, including Dropbox and Google Drive support. Some of the stories/poems are embedded within anthologies. Also, Gutenberg has recently added additional elements to their texts related to donations and indemnification for usage, though donations are not required to access the texts. In some cases, texts are just text with little or no formatting. This could easily be changed in Word. Some large files (in PDF format) may take a while to load, depending on your network/device speed. In some cases, there were multiple texts available and I compared them and made a decision. Again, questions about this or a better resource can be emailed to me. Many of the following resources are also available to students in some form via Shmoop.com, SparkNotes, Cliff Notes, etc. We havent seen the modules yet though I will personally be looking for what is Google -proofed, that which students cant just look up on the Internet for easy answers. I hope youll do the same.
