I believe economic impact must be considered in policy decisions. Congressman McKinley offered, What we have to deal with in Washington is the irrational far left. In hearings almost weekly, we have to endure comments from people who dont understand coal. We need people to realize that carbon cycles happen and that when you pick on coal all you are doing is hurting the working man. And, Attorney General Morrisey said, This is where we begin to develop the legal theories to make sure the EPA is going to be adhering to the rule of law much more carefully. I think people are going to realize that Attorney Generals office is going to be far more aggressive than youve seen previously. Other speakers offered their perspectives on various environmental, safety, and production issues. Industry members were also honored for excellence in mine reclamation and safety performance. Consolidation Coal Company and their Turkey Gap Refuse Impoundment in Mercer County claimed the states top award for environmental stewardship the Greenlands Award. In presenting the Greenlands Award to Consol, West Virginia Coal Association Vice President Jason Bostic said, This award is for their work in reclaiming a refuse area, preparation plant and a deep mine complex. After reclamation of the mining complex was completed, Consol initiated reclamation of the impoundment in 2011 and finished it in 2012, leaving an aesthetically pleasing and highly functional end result. Thirteen other companies were also recognized for their commitment to the environment at the Symposium, including Coal-Macs New Ridge East Surface Mine in Mingo County, which took home the Turkey Habitat Award.
