Start of Class: Meet on carpet with pencil and notebook Write Reconstruction on marker board What do you think this means? What are some strategies you can use? (prefix, root, suffix) Introduction of Lesson: Explain that we are going to be learning about the Reconstruction Era in the United States Does anyone know what that is? Can you predict based on the handout? (Use the images) As you read along, circle vocabulary that is new to you Lesson Instruction: Stop after paragraphs about vocabulary words: black codes, Freedmens Bureau, Thirteenth Amendment, Reconstruction Act, 14th Amendment, 15th Amendment, Jim Crow laws, sharecropping At the end of the paragraphs with those words, stop and ask if they found any vocabulary they found challenging. Ask them to define those words using the context surrounding the word. Remind them to underline/circle/highlight the definition of the word in the article. When finished reading the article, ask them to summarize what they read. On the marker board, write Successes and Failures and ask the students to take notes in their notebooks as we discuss this. Closure/Wrap-up/Review: Get ready for art Line up for restroom Self-Assessment: This lesson was a good introduction to our Civil Rights Unit because it helped bridge the gap of knowledge the students have between the Civil War and the end of slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. It also fulfilled the objective of teaching the students about the differences between a law existing and the law actually being enforced which will be further explored in the Civil Rights Movement unit. It also taught a lot of vocabulary words by first modeling taking notes as a whole class and then putting those notes in an essay format.
