3. Why study Operations Management? If you are a person who likes working with people, who enjoys analysing and solving problems, developing solutions, gaining co-operation, motivating people, and who always seeks better, quicker and cheaper ways of doing things - then this is the course for you! Qualified persons in Operations Management are employed by manufacturing companies and service organisations because this qualification is most suitable for careers in production and operations management. In operations management you will specialise in production scheduling, material movement, inventory control, quality management, work simplification, productivity improvement, and will contribute to the design and implementation of integrated systems comprising capital, plant, manpower and raw materials. Your objective will be to constantly improve methods, procedures and practices within an organisation in order to increase productivity and profits. 4. Job Opportunities Operations Management offers a challenging and exciting career in the private sector. The expertise and skills that you will achieve find their optimum application and growth in the manufacturing industry, progressively, as Production Assistant / Production Planner, Production Scheduler / Head Planner, Production Superintendent, Production Manager and Operations Management. People with Operations Management qualifications and experience are also well equipped to start their own businesses and may later register with the Production Management Institute as professional Operations Managers. 5. Bursaries and Loans Several bursaries and loans are available on grounds of need and academic performance. Leadership bursaries are also available to students who prove themselves to be leaders on campus. The closing date for bursaries and loans is 30 November. 2. Course Structure A diploma will be awarded after successful completion of 13 subjects (three years full time theoretical education). First year: Operations Management I, Organisational Effectiveness I, Manufacturing Technology I, Workplace Dynamics I, Computer Skills I, Communication Studies 1 & 2. Second year: Operations Management II, Organisational Effectiveness II, Costing and Estimating I, Operational Research III, Communication Skills I. Third year: Operations Management III, Operations Management Techniques II and III, Labour Law, Organisational Effectiveness III, Operations Management Practice I. Note: All the subjects consist of two modules, each will be offered on a semester basis during the year of study. Basic principles and theories are continuously supported by assignments, practical projects and computer applications. All classes and study materials are available in English. COURSE PREREQUISITES (i) A National Diploma in Operations Management or equivalent qualification. (ii) An average of 60% for the subjects at the National Diploma level. 6.1 National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) - NSFAS offers an opportunity for academically deserving and financially needy students to access a loan, part of which (40%) can be converted into a bursary, depending on students pass rates. Awards during 2003 ranged between R1 500 and R20 000. - Loans have to be repaid once you are employed and your annual salary is R26 300 or more and payment would be deducted from monthly salaries of those who have received assistance from the scheme, based on an individuals earnings. Interest charged on loans is subsidised. 6.2 Who qualifies for an NSFAS loan? - South African citizens registered at a South African University. - An undergraduate, studying for a first tertiary educational qualification. - Individuals able to demonstrate potential for academic success. - Financially needy individuals. 6.3 Where do you apply for a loan? From Financial Aid Bureaus at the University and former technikons where you are / or plan on studying. They will offer advice and assistance with loan applications. 7. Registration and Accommodation Prospective students are advised to apply early in the year preceding registration for admission to the course, and/or for hostel accommodation. Arrangements can be made to visit the campus in this regard. Closing date for application for registration and accomodation is the 30 November each year. 7.1 International students: First Semester and Year students: 30 October and 30 November.
