Interesting origin of phrases Dog in the manger

Meaning The expression refers to a person who selfishly withholds from others something useless to himself or herself. The expression comes from one of the ancient Greek fables ascribed to Aesop. In this fable, a dog went into a stable and fell asleep on the hay in a manger (an open box designed to hold food for livestock). Later a hungry horse enters the stable and tries to eat. But the dog, angry because it had been awakened, barked and snapped and would not let the animal eat. However the dog himself does not like the food that was kept there. Today the expression is still widely used. Anyone who neither enjoys a thing nor allows others to enjoy it is called a dog in the manger. PS: The phrase was so popular that people invented spin-offs: He was ill-mannered and dog-in-the-mangery". She wanted to satisfy her dog-in-the-mangerish jealousy". He displayed an act of official dog-in-the-mangerism".
