Baker Hughes solution and results

A customer needed to complete two onshore wells in a mature eld in Ecuador. This operator typically performed the perforating operation before running the electrical submersible pump (ESP) completion, using kill-weight uids for well control while the completion equipment was installed. However, production testing indicated that productivity of the initial completions was reduced as result of formation damage caused by the kill weight uids used after perforating. Baker Hughes offered a solution that combined running underbalanced tubing conveyed perforating (TCP) and the ESP in one operation. This eliminated the need for damaging well control uids, resulting in zero to minimum formation damage. This solution reduced rig time by eliminating one pipe trip, cutting three days off rig time and resulting in a savings of USD 21,000 (three days at USD 7,000 per day).

The perforating guns and bottom gun anchor were deployed using wireline, and were correlated and set on depth, and then the ESP and completion were installed. After the 7-hour time delay Model HTD MkII Firing Head was activated, underbalanced perforating was accomplished using the ESP featuring a 400 series multi-stage pump with saturated surface dry (SSD) construction to pump the well to underbalanced state. Underbalanced perforating was employed to increase productivity by preventing perforation damage to the formation. In the peforation operation, Model J Bottom Gun Anchor system, designed to reduce gun shock potential on the ESP completion, was used. It automatically releases to bottom after ring, leaving full access to the perforated interval. Predator ZX high performance shaped charges were used to achieve maximum formation connectivity.

After the completion was deployed using this one-trip method in two wells, initial production in the rst well was 1,158 BOPD versus an expected 480 BOPD, and 3,074 BOPD versus an expected 1,000 BOPD in the second well, a combined 35% increase over expectations. This represented a signicant increase in the expected initial oil production rate. The customer plans to use this system in most of the initial completions in this eld, and Baker Hughes has been hired to perform additional jobs.
