The Boy Who Never Gave Up The book Hatchet was written by Gary Paulsen.

Gary has written a lot of survival adventure stories including Hatchet. The main character in the book is Brian Robeson. He is a 13 year old boy. Brians parents got a divorce and Brian thought about the horrible split a lot. His mother lived in New York City and was a Real Estate Agent, his father lived in the Oil Fields in Northern Canada and worked as an Oil Engineer. Brian rode in a small plane to see his father in Canada. In the plane it was only Brian and the pilot named Jake. Sitting in the Co- Pilot seat, was Brian. After the pilot had a heart attack and died while he was flying the plane, Brian was forced to fly the plane by himself, if he wanted to at least try to live. Getting in a plane crash was a result of the fuel running out in the plane. Brians story shows that he was a person who never gave up. In the beginning of the story, Brian almost drowns. Brian crashes the plane hes flying in into an L shaped lake and the plane starts sinking. The windshield shatters while hitting the water. He is still strapped to the seat and once he unbuckles, he realizes that his windbreaker is stuck to the seat. When he finally got his windbreaker out from the seat and after he got out of the plane, he was struggling to get out of the water in time for him to breath. Once Brian finally got out of the water, he was exhausted. Later in the story, Brian creates fire! Brian figures out that in two dreams he had, one about his best friend Terry and one about his father that they were telling him to try to make fire! He makes a "nest" out of birch bark for the fire to have a place where the sparks will go. Starting to hit his hatchet against the stone wall against his shelter, Brian creates sparks. Thinking that he

needs to blow on the sparks to create larger sparks, leading to fire, Brian does so. Then, he had fire. At the end of the story, a tornado hits and Brian is left with nothing. Brian hears a weird growling noise and thinks it sounds like a train whistle. He remembers from T.V. that the noise was a tornado. The fire starts spraying red coals and sparks all around Brian. The tornado sweeps away all of Brians things except his hatchet. Then, Brian was left with what he started with. In conclusion, Brians story shows that he was a person who never gave up. Brian has made it through many events including: almost drowning, making fire with just his hatchet, and surviving a tornado. He did not know how long it took, but later he looked back on his time of crying in the corner of the dark cave and thought of it as when he learned the most important rule of survival, which was feeling sorry for yourself didnt work.
