Danni Varenhorst #614 Never Give Up Three-time Newberry Award winner Gary Paulsen's book called Hatchet is an adventure

survival book. Hatchet is about a 13 year old city boy named Brian Robeson who goes on a trip to Canada to visit his father for the summer. His mother and father were divorced, so his father moved to Canada. Brian was riding in the copilot's seat in a Cessna 406 bush plane. There was no one else in the plane but him, and the pilot. While, he was looking out the window thinking about his parents divorce it led him to think about the Secrete. The Secrete was what caused the divorce. During the plane trip to Canada, Brians pilot starts to have pain in his chest, and has a heart attack of which he dies. After the pilot died Brian tried to fly the plane on his own. Earlier in the flight the pilot had let Brian fly the plane for a little bit, so he already had an idea how to fly it. Every ten minutes Brian would use the radio transmitter to see if anybody could help him fly the plane to his destination. Later on Brian realized what might happen if he ran out of fuel. He thinks landing the plane in the trees wont work because he would most certainly die, so he concludes landing in a lake would be the best choice. After looking for about two hours he sees an L shaped lake, and lands there. Instead of skipping like a rock, like he thought, the plane sunk to the bottom. When Brian finds his way back to shore he feels very tired, weak, and hungry. After he slept for hours he eventually has enough strength to get up and find a shelter. Brian eventually finds one behind a rock. Then he realized to survive he would need to make a fire for warmth

and protection. He tries many different ways to make a fire. Such as, rubbing two sticks together, and trying to light his twenty dollar bill on fire. None of those ideas work. In his sleep he hears a noise in his shelter, he became scared and throws his hatchet at the creature, creating sparks from hitting the stone wall, and then creating a fire. During the night Brian recalls that he saw a survival pack in the plane that had everything he needed. However, Brian had to get into the plane and swim to the plane to get to it. He becomes frustrated from trying and eventually hits the plane and notices it dented. So he gets his hatchet and works away until he makes a hole large enough so he could fit. Brian finally finds the survival pack. But, it took Brian many hours to accomplish. In conclusion, this story shows that Brian is a person who never gives up, even at the toughest times. Brian he flew a plane without a pilots help, made a fire without any experience, and gets the survival pack out of the plane that was under the water. If Brian wasnt a survivor he would have died on multiple occasions on this adventure, but he didnt give up. He used his key instruments which were his will and the hatchet. When Brian makes his fire he says, Fire. The Hatchet was the key to it all.
