    JakeParkhurst DRA180:FLASH 03/19/2013 TheKnifeandtheFruit WhenIfirstcametothemasterclassauditionsforFlash,Iwasskepticalofwhether spending25hoursaweekwouldbeworthmytime.MostdancepiecesIhavebeenpartof involvedadirectorwhochoreographedandtriedtogetthedancerstoconformtotheideainthe director'smind.ButQudusemphasizedhowwewereallartistscreatingthispieceandthatwe allbroughtideastothetablethatwereequallyvalid.Sowhenthedeadlinetocommitarrived,I enrolledbecauseIwouldrarelyfindanotheropportunitytodiscussanddevelopmystylewithan experienceddancerwhilecreatingmyownwork.AsIexpected,Ihadlearnedtechniquesof lettingemotionfinditspurestexpressionandhowtodevelopthatexpressioninanengaging mannerwhilestillkeepingitsintegrityasamanifestationoffeeling.Butastheperformances cametoaclose,Irealizedthatthefeelingsthatinspireapiecearemoresignificantthanthe meansbywhichtheyhavebeenexpressed. ThedarkthemeofFlashallowsfortheconsiderationoftaboosubjectstobediscussed. Asthedancerplayingthepartofthemurderer,IwasaskedrepeatedlyhowIfeltsteppingintothe worldsinisterfeelings.Theresultingdiscussionstaughtmethateveryone,notjustmewhois geneticallypronetoschizophrenia,hasmurderousandotherwisesociallyfrownedupon thoughts,(everyoneIaskedansweredaffirmativelytowhenyoudrive,haveyoueverbeen awarethatyoucoulddriveontothesidewalkandrunpeopleover?).Withoutthisshowasa basisfordiscussion,thosefeelingsandthoughtsthatpeoplecarrywouldlikelynotbe expressed,becauseittakesatremendousamountofcouragetoputyourreputationinjeopardy byadmittingtohavingsocallpervertedthoughts.Butitisonlybydiscussionthatthesefeelings andmentalcuriositiescanbeexaminedandresolved,(Ilearnedthatitisnottheawarenessof
