Student-Friendly Standards E9.2.2 I can tell you about producers in my neighborhood. E9.2.3 I can tell you about consumers in my neighborhood. E9.2.4 I can tell you why people work.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE 166 Get Set to Read. o o Preview Have children read the lesson title and examine the illustrations. Ask: What is this lesson about? Build on What You Know When asked, most children will say that they get the things they need and want from family members. Explain that people, mostly adults, usually buy or make the things they need or want. Introduce vocabulary ( producer, consumer, income)

2. As a class, read p. 166-169, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE.

o o o

(TE 167) Why is a farmer a producer? (TE 167) If a farmer grows or produces apples, what do you call a person who buys and eats the apples? (TE168) What do people usually get or earn for the work they do?

3. Complete the study guide/ Homework sheet (TE p.169) 4. CLOSURE: Discuss questions in Lesson Review (TE 169) o o Name two ways to earn income What is a way that someone can be both a producer and a consumer?

F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the study guide/homework sheet as an assessment. I will also use formative assessment while having discussions and checking for understanding throughout the lesson. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students will be able to identify consumers and where they make purchases. Students will be able to identify produces in the neighborhood and community. Student will be able to discuss why people work. If the student can complete their study guide and participate in class discussions I will know that they can identify consumers and producers as well as be able to discuss why people work. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think it will be easy to teach about why people work and about needs and wants. I think at a second grade level students will know about what their wants are. They also probably know their parents go to work to earn money. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the vocabulary could be challenging for the students. This lesson introduces bigger words. Some students might understand the concept but might have trouble using the vocabulary. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would have the students do an activity where they look through magazines and cut out pictures of different consumers and producers. They can make a collage with all of the magazine clippings they find.

4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who dont grasp the concept I would have a small group discussion with those students. We would talk about places that their parents might go to or where they like to shop. I think helping relate the concept to their personal lives would be beneficial. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I wouldnt change anything about the lesson, I think it is pretty straight forward and simple. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The textbook does a great job of guiding me through a lesson. It wasnt too difficult to write this lesson plan. The only thing I would say that was a little difficult was deciding what kind of activity to do that wouldnt take up too much time. I decided to do the worksheet instead.
