A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan helps explain why we say the Pledge of Allegiance each day. Students will recite the Pledge of Allegiance and learn what it means. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure steps 1-8. C. Materials: Elmo American flag in the classroom Copies of the Pledge of Allegiance 1 copy of the book I Pledge Allegiance by Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson Highlighters Butcher paper or large poster board Markers D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o
C13.1.4 Recite the Pledge of Allegiance. C13.1.5A Develop an awareness of traditional U.S. and Nevada patriotic activities, holidays, and symbols

Student-Friendly Standards I can say the Pledge of Allegiance. I know what it means to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher asks students to look at the U.S. Flag and asks what the flag means. What do the students think of when they see the American flag? 2. Ask the students to name what we recite each morning when we come into class. When students answer, ask them what they think it means. Why do we need to recite it each day? Do they know what it means to pledge allegiance? 3. Students will receive copy of the Pledge of Allegiance and teacher will use Elmo to show a copy. 4. Tell students we are going to read through the Pledge of Allegiance together. Ask students to underline or highlight any part that they dont understand or find confusing. Read aloud. 5. Teacher will read book I Pledge Allegiance out loud. Pause often to discuss with the content with the students.

6. Students should now understand the meaning behind the Pledge of Allegiance. Clarify any misconceptions at this point. 7. Explain that as a class, we are going to write our own classroom Pledge of Allegiance based on our classroom goals. 8. As a class, decide on what should be included in the classroom pledge using less than 6 sentences. Teacher will write the classroom pledge on the butcher paper of poster board. 9. CLOSURE: Students will write in their journal why the Pledge of Allegiance is meaningful to them and one important thing they learned about the Pledge of Allegiance. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The students journal will measure if the students gained any understanding about the Pledge of Allegiance. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will be able to tell students met their objectives for the lesson by their ability to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. I will also be looking for evidence in their journal entries that mention at least 1 fact we learned about from the book I Pledge Allegiance that explains why we say the Pledge of Allegiance.
