2013 Season: Issue Four

was fond of saying It was a game of two halves, full credit to the opposition and it is a particularly apt description for the latest Sealords classic. Check out the latest match report below and apologies for the lateness of this issue. On the occasional Wednesday my boss does actually expect me to do some work. Enjoy, Paddy

Sealords vs Porirua City, Waihora Park 27.4.13

Waihora Park was home to one of the classic Sealords victories last season and the whole team approached this fixture with heightened anticipation. A rolled ankle would deny the Sealords the presence of defensive stalwart Simon Treasure Me Duncan but Manager Drysdale still had a full squad to choose from. After last weeks lament the previous damp weather was nowhere to be seen and glorious sunshine swamped Waihora Park. Porirua City are a good football team. The youngest team in Capital Ten by quite a distance and one of the fittest as well. They play lovely little passing triangles as well and have plenty of speed up front. To come away with another victory here the Lords would need to be at their best. The game kicked off with P City moving the ball well and doing a lot of running. But excellent defensive work from the Lords was keeping them at bay and a couple of Sealords attacks highlighted potential weaknesses in the P City keeper. As the game continued the Lords began to exert more influence going forward and came close a couple of times. When all of a sudden, Kieran Bruce Lee (Nursing a painful groin injury!) broke down the left flank. Moving the ball onto his left foot he put in a perfectly weighted cross for Tom Horse Newby to head in the opener. 1-0 to the Sealords. P City responded with renewed vigour but still the Sealords defensive effort was immense. With P City reduced to only one serious chance, in a goal mouth scramble from which they should have scored. But an air ball strike by their attacker came to nothing. The Sealords charged up the field and with only minutes remaining before halftime it was 2-0. This time on the right flank Kris Phils Flatmate Annear lobbed the ball over the P City defender to a rampaging Jason Big Daddy van Hattum. Jase coolly slid the ball across the penalty area to Kieran who took aim

from the tightest of angles and it was in. As the lads trudged off for half-time they had a right to feel pleased with themselves. They had soaked up plenty of pressure from a talented attacking side and struck with a vengeance when the opportunities presented themselves. Unfortunately for the Lords it wasnt to last as P City came out from the sheds a different beast. Whatever words of inspiration their captain used at halftime worked a treat. To put it simply the Lords were overwhelmed. P City was now moving the ball at a frantic pass and when the lost it they were pressing like mad men. But still the Lords were managing to hold them out. Until A through ball was put in behind the Sealords defence and Lewis Mr Consistent Hensman and the P City striker sprinting shoulder to shoulder for it. Lords keeper Dan Why are you captain? White came sprinting out to collect the ball but was a second too late as the P City striker got the slightest of touches with the toe of his boot, but it was enough to roll the ball into the net. Subs at the quarter brought renewed effort the Sealords but not enough to grab a crucial third goal and there was a certain inevitability when P City went up for corner. With none of the Sealords defenders able to clear, P Citys flame haired striker was free to pick up his second and make it 2-2 where it would remain. Giving up a two goal lead always leaves a bitter taste in the mouth but the Lords had fallen victim to a truly wonderful second half performance from Porirua. Man of the match went to Kieran Bruce Lee for his goal and assist. Second to Tom Horse Newby and third to Jonny Tim Wild. Result: Sealords 2 2 Porirua City Goals: T. Newby K. Lee Assists: K. Lee J. van Hattum
