2013 Season: Issue Five

All football clubs

have their founding mythologies and the Sealords are a part of that tradition. Our story begins on the hallowed turf of Wellington College (Originally masquerading as the Dutch side from Euro 2000) and on Tuesday night the team returned there for Round five, check out the match report below. And best wishes to Sir Alex on his retirement, youre a legend mate. Enjoy, Paddy

Sealords vs IBU Hotspurs, Wellington College 07.05.2013

Round five of the 2013 Capital Ten season saw the return of the Sealords to the mighty Wellington College for their first midweek/night match of the season (TV scheduling has ruined the game Ed.). It was the coldest night of the year and Manager Drysdale was facing a mini-crisis. Five players were unavailable for the match through either injury or being stuck in Taranaki and there were still question marks over Simon Netball Duncans ankle injury. Luckily however Manager Drysdale has planned for these type of events in advance and was able to promote a couple of strapping young lads from the Sealords reserves for their first taste of first team action. It would be fair to say Hamish The Terror Templeton and Mark Ball-hog Mckeown were champing at the bit to make their mark. Having lost twice to the Hotspurs last season all of the lads wanted to right those wrongs and the team came out firing from the get go. In central midfield Mike Stringer Stringer and Mark Mckeown were giving the Island Bay midfield a torrid time. Closing them down quickly and restricting their time on the ball. The defence was proving as solid as ever while Tom Horse Newby and Greg Carterton Severinsen were providing penetration on the flanks. Up front the bullish Templeton was spearheading the attack with his powerful runs while Captain Drysdale dropped deep to pick up the ball. And the Lords were causing problems for Island Bay. A number of times Templeton was able to get in behind the Bay defence only for the keeper to save and Captain Drysdale was guilty of a couple of horrific misses. An inspired substitution from Manager Drysdale would change all of that. At the fifteen mark on came Jason Iniesta van Hattum and with his first touch of the game he made a difference.

As the ball was played in, Jase was hovering on the edge of the box and timing his movement to perfection he launched an exquisite flick on into the path of Templeton just outside the six yard box. From an acute angle Templeton curled the ball past the Bay Keeper and the Lords were ahead! The second soon followed with Greg Severinsen spotting Jase once again lurking on the edge of the box. With his second touch of the game Jase played a perfectly weighted ball into the path of the galloping Templeton. Who powered it home into the bottom right hand corner, just inside the post. 2-0 and the Lords were flying. But they werent finished. Captain Drysdale was reintroduced off the bench and began to throw around a few nice touches. One of these was a ball from the edge of the box into a now rampaging Templeton, but this time he pulled the ball back across to the centre of the six-yard box where Tom Newby was waiting to pounce, 3-0!!! As the halftime whistle blew Manager Drysdale was acutely aware of the need to prevent a repeat of last weeks second half collapse. And as expected Island Bay came out a much more fired up team than in the first half. Island Bay began to dominate proceedings, however it was not with the same authority as Porirua City the previous week and the Lords were able to continue to attack on the break. Dan Why are you Captain? White was in truly magnificent form in the Sealords goal and when Island Bay did finally manage to peg one back from a goalmouth scramble there was no panic from the Lords. With twenty-five minutes to go they continued to try and play football and create chances. A magnificent full field run and shot that bounced off the cross bar from Lewis Mr Consistent Hensman being the pick of the bunch. As the final whistle blew the Sealords ran off as steam rose from the pitch in the cold air, another three points safely in the bag. Man of the Match went to Hamish Templeton for his two goal, one assist stunner. Another superb defensive performance from the lads was rewarded with second place for Lewis Hensman. Dan White picked up third for his efforts in goal. Result: Sealords 3 1 Island Bay Hotspurs Goals: H. Templeton x2 T. Newby Assists: J. van Hattum x2 H. Templeton
