Goutisacommonformofarthritischaracterisedbyrecurrentattacksofpain,swellingand redness.Goutismorecommoninmen,andoftenseveralmenoftheonefamilycanbeaffectedby gout. Whilemostothertypesofarthritisdevelopslowly,anattackofgouthappenssuddenly,often overnight.Themostcommonlyaffectedjointisthebigtoe,butgoutmaybeexperiencedinthe feet,anklesandknees,andlesscommonlyintheelbows,handsandotherjoints.Forsomepeople, eventheweightofabedsheetcancauseintolerablepain.
Causes of gout
Goutoccurswhenuricacidbuildsupinthebloodstreamanddepositsuratecrystalsinthejoint. Thebuild-upofuricacidismostcommonlycausedbyunder-excretionofuricacidbythekidneys, butmayalsobecausedbytheoverproductionofuricacidbythebody.Somepeoplehavehigher levelsofuricacidintheirbloodstreamwhencomparedtootherindividuals.Thisconditioniscalled hyperuricaemiaandcanbehereditary.Othercausesofgoutcanincludetheuseofdiuretics(fluid tablets)whichcancausetheretentionoftoomuchuricacid.
