Causes of gout
Goutoccurswhenuricacidbuildsupinthebloodstreamanddepositsuratecrystalsinthejoint. Thebuild-upofuricacidismostcommonlycausedbyunder-excretionofuricacidbythekidneys, butmayalsobecausedbytheoverproductionofuricacidbythebody.Somepeoplehavehigher levelsofuricacidintheirbloodstreamwhencomparedtootherindividuals.Thisconditioniscalled hyperuricaemiaandcanbehereditary.Othercausesofgoutcanincludetheuseofdiuretics(fluid tablets)whichcancausetheretentionoftoomuchuricacid.

Risk factors of gout


Apersonwithgoutismorelikelytohaveanattackwhenthey: Haveelevatedlevelsofurateintheblood Consumetoomuchalcohol(particularlybeer) Consumeadiethighinpurinessuchasmeat,sweetbreads,offal,shellfish,andfructose (foundinfruitjuices) Areobese Usediuretics Injureajoint Becomedehydrated.

Withouttreatmenttheattackusuallyresolveswithinoneortwoweeks,howeverwithmedications theattackcanberesolvedwithinseveraldays.
