A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson will discuss the responsibilities that different individuals have within a school. It uses visual representations and student involvement to achieve this objective. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade Skill Level: all skill levels Grouping: whole class - discussion, small group- mini lesson C. Materials: Bulletin board (basic map of the school already drawn on it) Magazines or clip art from computer Digital camera (optional) Colored paper Pencils Crayons, markers or colored pencils D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o C13.3.3 Explain individual responsibilities in the classroom and the school.

Student-Friendly Standards I can explain the classroom rules and my responsibility to the school.

E. Procedure: 1. Introduce the lesson by using the classroom bulletin board to create a simple map of the school. Ask students to brainstorm the different people within the school that help to make the school run efficiently (nurse, principal, teacher, bus driver, custodian, etc.). Students could either take digital pictures (if a digital camera is available) or students can use illustrations of either the worker or type of work represented. 2. The students will place the pictures and names of these workers in the correct spots on the bulletin board map of their school. (This useful map would be a great for orienting new students; fire drill exits may also be identified.) The teacher will then elicit responses from students about responsibilities of those workers at school and what would happen should these people fail to meet their responsibilities.

3. Teacher leads the discussion to responsibilities that teachers and students have in the classroom. What are our responsibilities in our classroom? What are your responsibilities in other areas of the school (lunchroom, playground or bus stop)? Are there any rules that you would like to change? If so why and how? Have a class discussion. 4. Break the students into 4 groups. Each group will have 5 minutes to create a poster on an 8X10 sheet of paper on the rules of a specific area at the school (classroom, lunchroom, bus stop, or playground). 5. CLOSURE: Review our responsibilities as members of a school and hang up posters by the bulletin board we created as reminders. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Explain individual responsibilities in the classroom and the school. The finished bulletin board and group posters will help measure student understanding. These visuals will help me to determine whether the students understand that each person is responsible for knowing and following the rules of the school. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know that students understand the concept when they are able to answer the questions about their own responsibilities within the school and they are able to voice their understanding in the class discussion. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I believe that it will be easy to teach about the responsibilities of the different people within the school. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part will be guiding the students to come up with simple rules and consequences that will be fair for everyone. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? The lesson will be extended the following day when the lesson plan covers responsibilities of people in your neighborhood. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I do not anticipate that there will be much difficulty in teaching the concept, but if there is I would talk with the student individually and see if I could explain it in a different way that the student might understand.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I do not believe that I would need to change any part of the lesson. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part was to come up with a fun way to make a visual of the important people and their responsibilities within the school.
