UC Irvine Sustainability

For the Orange County Sustainability Collaborative Montgomery Norton Saturday, March 6, 2010

Why ?
UC Irvine has long been a leader of sustainability with regard to construction, facilities, and maintenance. UC Irvine has lacked a cohesive and engaged student culture around significant local and global issues. The opportunities for collaboration between the campus and community abound and continue to grow in number and scope. This one step will bring UC Irvine up-to-speed and surpass other UC campuses regarding sustainability coordination and innovation with community engagement.

Institutionalizing Sustainability
It is important to publicly convey the Universitys commitment to sustainability and to address the needs and values of both the campus and the community. Institutions are under pressure to manage (their) environment and (their) impacts1 Sustainability is defined by long-range planning. Campus and community collaboration requires a proactive and consistent approach over time.2

Institutionalizing Sustainability
Universities and Communities are complex institutions with various constituencies. In order to achieve transformative action, efficacy, and sustainability, all stakeholders must be invested, work collaboratively, and integrate their creativity, resources, and vision towards a collective future.

OC Food Sustainability Collaboration

UC Irvine has the profound opportunity of hosting the collaboration of OC food sustainability stakeholders brought together to collaborate around regional challenges and impacts. UC Irvine has begun to lead other UC campuses regarding Sustainable Foodservice Practices, providing and sourcing Sustainable food. UC Irvine has created comprehensive programs evaluating local food sourcing for the campus, hosting a campus garden, developing a composting system, and reaching out to key community stakeholders.

Sustainability Leadership Pipeline

Experience working with campus entities and community stakeholders is of significant value to students confidence, experience, resume-building, and practical job-skills. Students are increasingly nervous about entering the job market given current economic conditions. Although many academic departments offer internship opportunities in traditional disciplines, the market is progressing toward hybrid and interdisciplinary experience. Sustainability, systems dynamics, and integrated job skills are in high demand.
