Room 1 @ HJHS with Whaea Christine

Wow! Since returning from Easter we have hit the floor running. Camp was an amazing time for most, great excitement and laughs were shared with all. From kayaking to archery to climbing a little hill all students and adults had a wicked time. Those who stayed at school were also well entertained with some amazing shelters and talents on display! We have wrapped up a lot of our units and are eagerly awaiting results. Next term we are focusing on reading, writing, fractions, multiplication, division, the marae, myths and legends. It is a jam packed term 2 so please ensure you are there regularly!!! Also dont forget WINTER UNIFORM must be worn! Have a safe and enjoyable holiday cant wait to see you all backlove Whaea xoxo

Technology and The Arts

Student Absence and Lateness

It is essential that we be informed as quickly as possible by telephone if your son or daughter is going to be absent from school on any particular day (no later than 9.00am please). When you ring the school you are asked to use the recording of absences dialling option OR you may text the school mobile phone on 0272617743. When we fail to hear from you about the absence or lateness of your child, you will be contacted by phone or text from the school or by School Attendance Services. We do this to ensure that you are aware of any pattern that may be developing some students leave home in adequate time for school but fail to make it on time on a regular basis. With absence it is easy not to be aware of how frequently a child has been away a day here and there, on a regular basis can soon add up to a significant amount of time off school. Consider these figures: A child who misses one day each week of school will have missed over 1 years of school by the end of Year 8 A child who misses 6 days of school each term will have missed almost a year of school by the end of their Year 8 If a child is 10 minutes late every day, by the end of year 8 they will have missed a whole term of school.

PB4L this year a team of HJHS staff have a mission to

implement some new ideas and initiatives about Positive Behaviour for Learning. We will be bringing to you each term some ideas and tips that might help you at home! Watch this space!

iPads @ School
Just a reminder that the agreement signed by many whanau states that there shall be no downloading of apps onto these devices without staff permission. Some students have been downloading non-school sanctioned apps. Please make sure when students return from holidays that only school sanctioned apps are on their iPads. Any queries see Whaea Christine.

eLearning @ HJHS
Our school is focused on lifting achievement through eLearning. An integral part of this focus is cybersafety. Listed below are some sites that discuss this concept and provide great examples your child and your whanau could use. Sporting News:
Basketball The HJHS school basketball team had an excellent season. This team finished up 1st in our grade. This is the highest achievement we have ever made in the last two years of playing. This group of boys have made a huge improvement in their skills over the season. We are looking for students who are interested in playing next term so if you are keen, come and see Mr Cappie.

Education outside the Classroom

For the three days students when the rest of the students were away at camp we ran an EOTC programme for those left at school. It was an awesome three days in which students worked together to build shelters, cook pancakes over tin cans and take part in many different team building activities. On the final day we had a talent show where students proudly showed off their awesome dancing and piano playing skills. Overall it was an exciting and fun filled three days in which both students and staff worked well together and demonstrated what being a Hamilton Junior High School Learner is all about. Thanks to all staff and students who played their part in making it a successful three days. Miss Whittle & Miss Lucy

Kauaeranga Valley Camp

On the 9th April 2013 we embarked on our journey to Kauaeranga Valley camp which is 5kms from the township of Thames. Over the next three days we had of the best adventures and experiences of our lives. We got involved in many new and exciting activities including; kayaking, air rifle shooting, go carts, archery, flying-fox and many more. We went on a long hike up the hill and cooled off by jumping into the refreshing swimming hole. We got a real sense of what it is like to camp by putting up our own tents and spending the night in them scaring each other with ghost stories! A great experience was had by all and a big thank you to the parents and teachers for all their help and support with such an awesome camp. Miss Young
