MAY 2013

From the Chair

April 25th saw the 98th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings on ANZAC Day in remembrance of all who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Upon reflection of this we must also remember the contribution that military engineers and engineering have brought to serve both the Nation and internationally in peacekeeping efforts. In Canterbury we have great examples of the role that military engineers played in helping to protect the Nation. Situated at Godley Head is one of the most extensive WWII costal defence batteries left in New Zealand, built to protect Lyttleton Harbour. Although having suffered earthquake damage these sites still inspire awe in their design and sheer scale. Looking forward to 2014 and the IPENZ Centenary, we will hopefully organise visits to these defences. Although the buildings are currently closed it is well worth a walk around and to look through the fences. See links here for more information. Last month we had the honour of being shown around the Transitional Cardboard Cathedral by BECA and Bishop Victoria Matthews. Bishop Matthews gave us great insight into the purpose and relationship that the Cathedral has with its congregation and the community. We also had a well-received site visit around the Yike Bike factory, showing real innovation from Canterbury. Our IPENZ calendar is nearly full through to August/September with site visits and presentations (Im excited about the first look into the renovated Arts Centre). We also have the IPENZ Presidents Visit and Professional Recognition Celebration, plus the Hopkins Lecture and Pickering Lectures to look forward to! I look forward to meeting more of you at the upcoming events, until then keep safe and warm! SCIRT Bridge of Remembrance Triumphal Arch Seismic Strengthening
Presenter: Peter Routledge, CEng, MICE, MIStructE, Senior Bridge and Civil Structures Engineer for Opus International Consultants, currently seconded to SCIRT.

Tuesday 7 May
Time: 5.30 6.30pm Location: Residents Room, SCIRT Office, 1 Magdala Place, Middleton (Off Annex Rd), Christchurch

The Bridge of Remembrance Triumphal Arch was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and immediately closed to public access. A seismic assessment of the monument concluded that it was Earthquake Prone due to its minimal capacity for flexure and shear, and potentially brittle failure modes. The decision was taken to maintain the safety cordon around the Triumphal Arch and Bridge until strengthening can be completed. SCIRT developed an innovative strengthening scheme based around enabling the structure to rock reliably on its foundation. This presentation will outline the rocking philosophy, and some interesting features of the design. It will also discuss the numerous issues encountered when developing this unusual solution including some of the difficulties resulting from the structures heritage status. The monument is listed as a Category 1 Historic Place and this had a major impact on the strengthening strategy. The structure is high profile and has been the subject of intense political pressure from local and central government, other major stakeholders and interested parties such as the RSA and the local media. Hot and Steamy A Career in the Geothermal Industry

Members are invited to the first in a series of IPENZ Canterbury Diversity guest speaker events. Diversity is an initiative within the Canterbury Branch that seeks to celebrate diversity in engineering - targeting female and immigrant engineers. Speaker: Geologist, Jane Brotheridge Wednesday 22 May
Time: 6:00pm 7:00pm Location: Room A134, Imagitech theatre, CPIT (Entry via the main CPIT entrance off Madras St, through the double glass doors and it's on the right)

As a science graduate of the Geothermal Institute at The University of Auckland, Jane has been involved in renewable energies for almost 18 years, a large part of which was spent in the geothermal industry, with a short spell in wind energy development. Her work has taken her to Indonesia, Nicaragua and Europe up hills, down rivers and into some very hot and steamy places.

As a geologist, Janes experience is with projects at their very inception reconnaissance, mapping, sampling, surveying following through with resource reviews and assessments. Once a geothermal resource is deemed viable, the drilling rigs come in and tapping of the resource begins. Jane has also spent a number of years on these drilling rigs with people of nationalities from around the world, in often challenging environments. RSVP: by Friday 17 May to Ros So-Beer: RSo-Beer@globalskm.com

SCIRT Halswell Pressure Sewer Project

Wednesday 29 May Although the west of Christchurch received comparably less damage than the east, parts of Halswell suffered considerable damage and liquefaction. This has led to the requirement for an alternative sewerage system to replace the gravity system which was badly damaged. Martin Crossen (Citycare) and Jeanette White (SCIRT) will present on the challenges in design and construction in one of Christchurchs first permanent pressure sewer systems. RSVP: by Friday 24 May to Chris Maguire: IPENZCanterburyRSVP@gmail.com
Time: 5.30pm 6.30 pm Location: Residents Room, SCIRT Office, 1 Magdala Place, Middleton (Off Annex Rd), Christchurch

LOCAL NEWS Futureintech

Sticking with maths and sciences for a ticket to anywhere Years 10 and 11 are the time when students start to make subject choice decisions that shape their qualification and career paths. Unfortunately, many dont realise that they need to stick with maths and sciences to be able to take advantage of a wide variety of rewarding careers in technology, engineering and science, so were pleased to report that more and more secondary schools are now asking Futureintech to talk to this age group. Our Year 10 Science Careers Unit helps students to discover the diverse array of science-based careers right here in New Zealand. Over three periods, each class is visited by two Ambassadors as well as doing their own research using resources such as the Futureintech website. The Ambassadors may be two different types of engineers or one engineer and one technologist/scientist. They talk about who they are, what they do, why they love it and give a couple of examples of interesting projects they have been involved in. Each Ambassadors talk is only 15-20 minutes long, but the messages the Ambassadors impart when telling their individual career stories have been striking a chord with the students. Many schools who initially asked for two visits have come back and asked for another two Ambassadors from additional disciplines or industries. Last year, Year 11 students at St Thomas of Canterbury College heard from two Ambassadors as part of their Science Careers study unit, and requested another two visits a few weeks later. Science Head of Department John Gaffaney tells me that this year 50% of their Year 12 students have chosen to take Physics. He believes that the Ambassadors visits played a pivotal role in opening the students eyes, and says that a qualification in engineering is a ticket to anywhere was a key message!

Environmental site engineer Kimberly Jupp from McConnell Dowell Constructors talking about her career at Hornby High School

Acoustic engineer Aaron Staples from Marshall Day Acoustics giving a sound demonstration at Christchurch Boys High School

Other schools that have had Ambassadors visit their junior s econdary classes include Christchurch Boys High School, Cashmere High School, St Bedes College and Hornby High School. Ive also scheduled visits in the coming terms for Hillmorton High School, Burnside High School, Linwood College, St Thomas of Canterbury College, Villa Maria and Riccarton High School. Futureintech Ambassadors are doing such an amazing job in Christchurch and I am always looking for more people to join the team. If you or any of your staff would like to get involved, please email me. Catherine Smith christchurch@futureintech.org.nz.
