On October 1st 2000 the Department of Telecom operations, Government of India became a corporation and was christened Bharat Sachar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Today BSNL is the No. 1 Telecommunication company and largest public sector under taking of Inda covering 35 million telephone connections continues to service the nation with latest digital switching technology. Even with its vast customers base they were able to instill confidence among its customers with the expansion of telecom network, introduction of new telecom service in all villages. Telecommunication Company and the largest public sector undertaking of India with unauthorized share capital of $3977 millions and net worth of $ 14.32 billion. It has a network over 45 million lines covering 5000 towns with over 35 million telephone connections. The telephone infrastructure alone is worth about 100000 crore (US$22.74 billion) and a turnover of Rs.31400 crore (US $ 7.14 billion) BSNL adopt latest digital switching technology like OCB, EWSD, AXE10, FETEX, NEC, etc and widespread transmission network including SDH system up to 80 gbps web telephony, DIAS, VPN Broad brand and more than 400000 data customers, BSNL continues to serve this great nation.

The responsibilities include improvement of the already impeccable quality of telecom services, expansion of telecom network, introduction of new telecom services in all villages and instilling confidence among its customers. Today with over 45 million line capacity, 99.9% exchange digital, nation wide Network management & surveillance system (NMSS) to control telecom traffic and over 400000 route kms of OFC network, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is a name to reckon with in the world of connectivity. Mobile Telephony Mobile telephony was introduced in Indian markets in mid 1990s. In the last few years, the sector has witnessed tremendous growth. The subscriber base is adding more and ore customers every year. There are about 525.65 million mobile phone connections (Oct 2009), is the third largest telecommunication network in the world and the second largest in terms of number of wireless connections. Also, mobile segment has welcomed more and more players every year. Liberalized policies have ensured lower tariffs and reduced roaming rentals. This will lead to increased usage of mobile phones.

In India, public players in mobile telephony have 22% market share. MTNL started its mobile services in 2000, with its Garuda telecom service. It now owns three brands i.e. Garuda, Trump and Dolphin in mobile segment. BSNL entered mobile segment in 2001 with Cellone and Excel mobile services.
