Ski Trip 2013
For six days... six whole days, they got to show off their moves down the snowy mountains. Of course not everyone was a pro at this, and there were some major crashes, but no major harm was done. After all, if you dont practise, you wont learn. The ski group also got to ski at Saas-Fee, which was a 10 minute bus ride from SaasGrund. They did not only get to experience the joy of whooshing down a mountain slope at unimaginable speeds, but they also visited the Worlds Largest Ice Cave at the top of the Alps. As one of the skiers, Helia Talebi, proclaimed, It was epic!! As always, the ski trip this year was not one to miss! With exciting crashes in the snow, entertaining bus rides, and amazing sites to see... Why on earth did anyone miss this?! When our beloved skiers arrived at Zurich, they took a flight to Geneva, Switzerland. Then a four hour bus ride to Saas-Grund followed. You would think that that long of a journey would tire anyone out, but the prospect of flying down the ski mountains kept the energetic skiers wide awake and ready to have fun! And they definitely had fun.

Besides a great skiing experience, our skiers were able to enjoy one more aspect of the trip: the food! Food, glorious food! Its what gives us our energy, and makes us go, Yum! This ski trip was definitely a chance to be lavished with delicious Swedish treats that we only wish we had in Tanzania. So now that we know all about how amazing of a trip this is, we all need to make sure that we suit up next year, and get ourselves to Switzerland for some of our own skiing experience. Particularly those of you in the younger grades; take charge of these opportunities while you can! You never know what the future has in store

Kilimanjaro 2013
stayed at Horombo for two nights, in order to adjust to the altitude, but afterwards the real climb began. We headed up through the area between Kilimanjaro and its sister peak, otherwise known as the saddle. The plant life disappeared, as the air grew thinner, and the land less hospitable, and by the time we reached Kibo hut, the last of the huts, there was not a speck of grass to be found. We stayed in Kibo for dinner, and tried to get a little bit of sleep before we prepared to summit. We finally reached Gilmans point by sunrise, looking into the crater, we had summited, but it was not over yet, we had to push our tired bodies to reach Uhuru peak, the highest point in Africa. 2 hours later, we were finally descending, proud of what we had accomDuring April of this year, 20 IST students plished. from grade 9 to grade 11 (including myself!) departed from their lives as students in order to fulfill a grander goal: to reach the highest point in Africa, the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Thanks to the amazing help from Mr. Battersby, Ms. Manchester, Mr. Adamick, and Ms. Maro, we were as prepared as we possibly could be for climbing 5892 meters. We had trained and exercised both on our own, and with the rest of the team, every week since the beginning of the year. We had gone over our necessary gear so many times we could list each article in our sleep. For the past couple of months climbing Kilimanjaro had been the largest goal on the whole teams mind. The first day of the climb, we hiked through the forest to get to the first hut, Mandara Hut. We were all excited for the rest of the climb, but we had to remember to go slowly. The next day, we packed up our bags again to head to Horombo. The environment of this walk was completely different than the day before. The higher we got, the less tree cover there was. We

Of the 20 students that departed from the gate, 17 made it to the summit at Gilmans. 11 made it to Uhuru. But we all felt accomplished, because what really mattered wasnt making it to the top, but the journey that got us there.

Poetry Month
[No Title] Sometimes I dont have words that can truly express me But I just keep on trying, and I write em how I best see, From the love, to the hate, feelings I that dont understand, Ah just let it go-take the paper n' the pen in hand Its where all my thoughts n' all ma fears really get released, And whenever Im there I am free n' I can be at ease So every time I have these dillemas over n' over again, I move back, make way and I give Power To The Pen - Aurelia Haule, Grd. 11

A Waking Dream Youre not a loner if youre not alone, are you? What if you wander the hall surrounded, suffocating, yet all alone. Breathless with the urge to fly, to soar, to jump of the precipice. You watch the edge moving closer and closer, and finally youre off. A moment of Euphoria, then it fades as you fall, the world just a blur. An eagle soars, a bat glides, yet it is the owl that saves you. The protector of the night. You wonder how light is only pronounced by the darkness that surrounds it. Is there a world where light exists without darkness, or darkness without light? You are surrounded yet alone, boxed in by fake smiles and fake hearts. You envy those who rule with a steel head and a steel heart, Breaking barriers apart, Do they leave anything unharmed? You are just a fly, a bug on an insignificant windshield, You manage to fly away before you get squashed. A victory unknown to others, yet a prize that is sweet to you. Your life. Your beating wings take you to a world of safety, freedom, and happiness. The moment it lasts will be treasured, for it is snatched away. You awaken with a start, into your boxed life, filled with grey. You secretly hold the truth that you can visit the world of color and safety. Just pen the words, After all, there is power to the pen. - Mahima Kumar, Grd. 9

Movie Review: The Perfect Storm
-Areeb M
Rating: 3/5 Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama Cast: George Clooney (Captain Billy Tyne), Mark Wahlberg (Bobby Shatford), Diane Lane (Christina Cotter) So... the movies set in October 1991. A group of commercial fishermen are hanging out, doing what they do best: fishing. Little do they know that a freak storm is about to hit the North Atlantic; talk about giving six scurvy pirates a shower (natures way of explaining a storm). This movie promises drama and tense anticipation as the fishermen fight for their lives while being caught in the storm. Overall, the movie is okay, with no generic hero type or bad guy. Just a couple of fishermen and their boat: the Andrea Gail. So you wont expect any cliche scenes during the 2 hours and 10 minutes (its a looo-ong movie). Naturally though, every movie has its bad qualities. This movie was made to recreate the experience of the Andrea Gayle and its crew during the storm of the century in the early nineties. Most people criticize it for not properly portraying what happened during the event. However, what we need to know is that its a MOVIE not a DOCUMENTARY. Movies arent meant to clearly retell what happened during the original event. Just think of the movie Titanic as an example.

and not to mention dramatic license.. theres a lot this film has to offer. Granted, not everyone has or will enjoy the movie, some even saying that, even with a top notch cast, this movie really sucks. But youll never know how you feel about it, until you actually take As a movie, there was the usual melodrama and cheesy the initiative to watch the film! lines, like Mark Wahlbergs (Bobby Shatford) touching line, There is no goodbye, only love. 5 Reasons to Climb Kili or Meru
Its the time of the year again when the year-long training pays off, and all the Kili and Meru climb participants head off to Arusha to finally get the job done. Heres why you should try out next year, if you havent been yet. 1. Its Fun! Ask around. Everyone whos been will tell you how much they suffered, but how they definitely dont regret going. Hanging out with a small group for a whole week to climb a mountain definitely guarantees some good stories afterwards. Moreover, the views and nature on the mountain are awesome. 2. Because you can. And I dont mean this in any inspirational sort of way; just take the opportunity and see what happens. 3. Because you can, and this time I do. Climbing these mountains might seem a daunting task to many, and the stories youve heard from the veterans probably dont help. Now I wont lie, the climb is straining on the mind and the body, but as long as they have the right mindset, anyone really can climb either of the peaks. 4. Bragging rights. Youve climbed the highest mountain in Africa. In fact, youve climbed the highest freestanding mountain in the world! Who wouldnt want to be able to say that? 5. Staying fit. If youre one of those people that wants to get fit, but never really gets around to doing any exercise, joining the Kili team is a good idea. Training forces you to exercise multiple times a week, and otherwise youll get kicked out. Hopefully youll continue the trend afterwards.
