Geniuses Thomas Edison was born in Ohio in the USA in 1847. When he was seven he entered public school but his teachers thought he was a confused and dreamy person and so he left school. From then on his mother taught him herself. At twelve he became a newsboy and candyseller for a railway company and in his free time he printed a newspaper which he sold to railway employees. In 1878 he invented the phonograph for recording sound.Can you imagine life without recorded sound? Next, in 1879, Thomas invented the electric light bulb. Ten years later he designed and made the first movie camera and the film industry was born.So, when you watch a film on television or in the cinema, its thanks to Thomas Edison! He died in 1931. During his life, he patented nearly one thousand inventions-not bad for someone confused!!! William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, in England.He married Anne Hathaway in 1582. In about 1590 Shakespeare moved to London. He worked as an actor and writer. Romeo and Juliet appeared in 1594 and Hamlet in 1600. His plays were very successful. By 1610 he was rich and he retired to Stratford-upon-Avon. He died on 23rd April, 1616. Nearly four hundred years later he is still very famous; millions of people all over the world read his works and see his plays in theatres, in cinemas and on television. There are recent film versions of Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet (starring Leonardo di Caprio), A Midsummer Nights Dream and the Merchant of Venice, for example.
