The basic range of Uponor products includes all system components designed for different uses in a variety of applications, e.g. tapwater and radiator connection as well as radiant heating/cooling. Description pipe The Uponor multi-layer composite pipe (MLCP) is a pipe generation that unites the advantages of a plastic and metal pipe and therefore offers a high degree of flexibility and toughness, coupled with high pressure and temperature resistance. The Uponor MLC pipe consists of a longitudinal safety welded aluminium pipe, to which an inner and outer layer of high temperature resistant polyethylene is applied (in accordance with DIN 16833). Owing to the specific form of the octene side chains in the molecular structure of the material, a similar effect is achieved when polyethy lene is cross-linked.

4 The Uponor multilayer composite pipe has a length expansion close to metal pipes because of its tight connection between the polyethylene and the aluminium layer.

Quality control Constant quality controls before and during production: Online inspections using special cameras, ball test, spiral test, measurement and tensile test. In the works laboratory: Raw material testing, pipe tests using test piece (peeling test, thickness gauging), pressure and temperature tests and hot storage test. Tests carried out by neutral German and international test institutes.
According to the DVGW worksheet W 542, the minimum long-time rupture strength of multi-layer composite pipes in drinking water distribution systems must be verified over a period of minimum 50 years. For this purpose, an independent test institute performs a number of tests and prepares the resulting internal pressure resistance diagrams. These values are provided by the SKZ for Uponor MLCP. In addition to further tests, the values shown in the long-time internal pressure diagrams form the basis for the issuance of the DVGW system test mark for MLCP with associated connectors. Together with the test institute and DVGW, Uponor is constantly working on pipe system tests in conformance with the associated worksheets of the DVGW.
The aim of these endeavours is to assure the quality of all currently approved MLCP products as well as extending the DVGW approval to new parts, fittings and pipe dimensions in the MLCP range of products.

The loading capacity of the connections is tested in regular tensile tests. In addition to continuous pipe testing in the laboratory, every MLC pipe coil is tightness-tested under pressure.

Resistance of temperature: Tap water: The maximum permanent operating temperature exists between 0C and 70C at a maximum permanent operating pressure of 10 bars*. The short-term malfunction temperature is 95C of a maximum of 100 hours in the operating lifetime. Heating: The maximum permanent operating temperature is 80C at a maximum permanent operating pressure of 10 bars*. The short-term malfunction temperature is 95C of a maximum of 150 hours in the operating time per year.
* In some special products the permanent operating pressure is lower than 10 bars. Please have a look on the pipe marking.
In case of exceeding the maximum permanent operating temperatures e.g. in solar systems or district heating systems, the Uponor MLCP system cant be connected directly to this kind of systems. It has to be ensured that in every situation the maximum limits of use of the Uponor MLCP system are not exceeded. In case of other use of the Uponor MLCP system Uponor has to be consulted.

The thermal expansion resulting from the mode of operation must be taken into account in the design of the pipe layout. The temperature difference t and pipe length L play a decisive role in thermal expansion. For all installation variants, the thermal expansion of MLC pipes must be taken into account. For pipes intended for concealed installation or installation in screed, the thermal expansion is absorbed by insulation in the area of directional change. The thermal expansion is calculated according to the following formula: l = x L x t Where the following are: l: Thermal expansion (mm) : Thermal expansion coefficient (0.025 mm/(m x K)) L: Pipe length (m) t: Temperature difference (K)

Note: The chapter Pressure test of tap water installations in the actual technical manual MLCP system for tap water installation and radiator connection is to be followed. Construction project:
Stage: Person carrying out the test: Test pressure = max. permissible operating pressure + 5 bar 15 bar (related to the lowest point of the system) All tanks, equipment and ttings, e.g. safety valve and expansion tanks, which are not suitable for the pressure test, must be removed from the system during the test period. The system is lled with ltered water and completely vented. A visual inspection of the pipe joints must be made during the test. After the test pressure has been reached a suitable time must elapse to allow for temperature equalisation between the ambient temperature and the temperature of the ll water. If necessary, the test pressure must be re-established after the waiting period.

The system specied above was heated to the design temperatures on and no leakage was found There was also no leakage found after the cooling. With frost danger suitable measures are to be taken (e.g. use of antifreeze, heating of the building). If no freeze protection is required for the intended system use, the antifreeze is to be removed by emptying and ushing the system with at least 3 water changes. Antifreeze was added to the water: Drainage as stated above: Yes Yes No No
