RELIGION Implemented Atenism the belief in one god (the Aten). He allowed others to worship freely in the beginning however 9 years into his reign he defaced and removed the names of Amun-Re and others. Amenhotep changed his name to Akhenaten. He banned polytheism. ART Art of the Amarna Period. Akhenaten was believed to have marfan disease. This gave him unique features/ feminine. He is depicted with wide hips, long face, narrow shoulders, etc. This was unique and unusual for the times. Most pharaohs were depicted with overtly masculine features. Stelas/reliefs also depict him with his family, as a sphinx (left) and the god Aten.

LEGACY A revolutionary monotheist who failed to change Egypts religious ideology. Married to Nefertiti, the most beautiful woman in Egypt and the possibly the mother of King Tut. After Akhenatens death, Egypt suffered a massive pandemic of influenza. People believed they were being punished by the gods and quickly re-instated polytheism.

TEMPLES He moved the capital from Thebese to Amarna (250 miles). Akhenaten took four years to build using mudbricks. He also built temples to worship Aten in Karnak and Thebes. The archeologists at Karnak dismantled 36,000 block from his temple in Karnak.

Akhenaten showed the importance of solar gods like Aten by creating art in which he and his family are indulging everyday activities beneath the sun disk and other art where he is worshipping it. Some hymns were composed to Aten. Akhenaten changed the way Egyptian art was created by making the Amarna art focus on the minutiae of life, which only happens because of the power and light the sun gives.
