Then run the grinder until the noise diminishes to a steady purr. This means there are no more large bits. 6. Dump the ground clay into a mixing bowl. Process the rest of the clay in small batches until it is all ground into small fluffy bits. Measuring the Water Because we started with a V4-pound package of clay, we can weigh the clay and add just enough water to bring it up to V4 pound again. The risk of mold on the clay is greatly reduced by using boiled water. 7. Using a kitchen scale, place the plastic water container inside the scale's basket or a larger bowl on the scale and set the weight at zero. 8. Dump the clay into the bowl, and pour water into the plastic container until the scale reads V4pound. (You should have something like 1/4 cup of water.) These scales are not extremely accurate, so always err on the side of not enough water. You can add more if needed. If using a postage scale, put a bowl with the water container inside it on top of the scale and set it to zero, then add the clay and water. Postal scales are much more accurate than kitchen scales.
Mixing the Clay 9. Dump about half of the clay into a mixing bowl. Reserve some clay in case you overload it with water. Or, if you like to make the clay into a softer paste, this allows you to make two batches.

10. Add about half the water to the clay in the bowl. 11. Mix it with your hands until it comes together to clean the bowl. Add more water or clay until it is the consistency that you want. 12. Mix the clay thoroughly using your hands. This helps incorporate the water into all the clay and dissolve any remaining dry bits. You will be able to feel if there are any lumps. 13. Knead the clay between your hands to form a smooth ball.
Storing the Clay 14. Wrap the ball

into

Dry clay is ground until all the large bits are broken down.

square of plastic wrap. Close

tightly and let it sit while you mix the remaining clay into a paste.

Mixing a Paste 15. Dump the remaining dry clay into the mixing bowl and add the rest of the water. If you want to make a wetter paste, just add more water and mix with your hands. 16. Mix it until it is smooth and the consistency that you prefer. Here it is as thick as cake frosting. 17. Scrape the bowl with a rubber scraper and place the wet paste into a plastic container for clay. Place a square of plastic wrap over the bowl. 18. Use the plastic water container and press the plastic wrap onto the surface of the clay. This is a very convenient way to use the wetter clay, and the water is always on hand! Use the water to smooth the surface of the clay after you've applied it. 19. The dryer clay can be stored in the same container, wrapped separately in its own plastic wrap.
Cleaning Up Clean up is easy. Unplug

A container for water is placed inside the bowl for clay.

the coffee

grinder and use a dry paper towel to wipe it out. It is too hard to clean if you add water or use a wet towel. You may get some clay under the blades that you can't reach. If there is any clay mess on your kitchen counter, it is easy to dissolve

Enough water is added to bring the combined weight to 1/4 pound.
