W
hat a wonderful year this has
been thus far! I can hardly
believe that it is already
Christmas time, leaving Grand
Assembly only six months away! I
hope that all of you are as excited
as I am! There is plenty to be done
between now and then, but I am
sure it will all be accomplished and
we will all have a wonderful time in
Charleston this coming June!
This year so far, as Grand Worthy
Advisor, has been more rewarding
than I could have ever imagined! So
far we have held two Grand Visitations
as well as several initiations and
events! Immediately after Grand
Assembly, I traveled to North
Carolina to bring greetings as well as
to Conclave and Grand Chapter for
the Order of the Eastern Star. All of
these traveling experiences have been
truly rewarding!
Supreme Assembly was held in
Chicago this past July and could not
have been more fun! To those of you
who were on the trip I want to thank
you for such a wonderful time and so
many wonderful memories. Chinese
food will always have a special place
in my life. J For those of you who
were unable to make the trip, I want
to encourage you all to go to the next
Supreme Session. I made so many
new friends and memories that I will
forever cherish, and I’m sure that
you would have a wonderful time as
well!

more and more girls. To date, we have
initiated 11 girls and have initiations
coming up to initiate more! Don’t
forget about the new membership
program we have created. For every
girl you bring into Rainbow, you
will receive a new charm for your
necklaces! Also, don’t forget that
the assembly with the most new girls
initiated will win the opportunity to
put a pie in my face as well as Mom
Marilyn’s face at Grand Assembly!
Keep up the great work of initiating
new girls! Please let me know when
your assembly plans initiations so
that I can try to attend.
I hope everyone enjoyed the
Christmas Ball as much as I did.
Michael Burge and I were thrilled
to see everyone having such a good
time! We were able to collect more
than three dozen toys for the Marine
Corps Toys for Tots drive. Thank you
to all who came and donated toys!
For those of you who were unable to
make it, don’t worry! You will have
another opportunity to hang out with
the DeMolay boys when we go snow
tubing on February 7! I hope to see
all of you there as we spend a day in
the snow!
Don’t forget that the next
visitation will be held on January
31 in Moorefield/Keyser. We will
be collecting stuffed animals of all
shapes and sizes for our service
project and to help our Grand Mother
Advisor with one of her service
projects. More information will be
coming soon about the visitation so

Assembly June 10-14. You should
all be receiving Christmas letters in
the mail with a tentative schedule
for Grand Assembly. Please note
that following the installation on
Saturday, we will be having an
optional fun event for everyone in
attendance, followed by a church
service on Sunday.
I want to take this opportunity to
thank all of you for the support you
have given me so far throughout the
year. I have seen the special place that
Rainbow holds in each of your hearts
and feel truly blessed that I have been
able to be a part of it. I hope to see
you all along my travels throughout
the state. I want to wish you and your
families a Merry Christmas & Happy

Moundsville stays busy this year!

GRAND FAITH oundsville has done a good bit
of work since Grand Assembly.
First we started with Conclave,
but I cannot find the pictures from
that activity. As a state we broke up
into smaller groups, like assemblies,
so that we could ride more rides. As
Moundsville roamed around, we
decided to get pictures with some of
the animals.
After Supreme Assembly,
Moundsville was invited to go to
a Masonic Picnic, but only two
Rainbow girls attended.
September 20th we had an
initiation for Rainbows and
Raindrops in Moundsville. We do
not happen to take a picture of the
new Rainbow members. Then
in October 23 we had another
Raindrops ceremony. The Grand
Visitation came. We had an
initiation, collected canned goods
for the food pantry, and also had
a very good program for Mallory.
We showed her Moundsville’s
additional treasures in the Pot of
Gold. Check out our photos!

Charleston Rainbow is Alive & Well!

MOTHER ADVISOR
C harleston Assembly is trying
to stay busy. While at Grand,
we had one girl initiated, Emily
Hornsby. Welcome, Emily! Thanks
to the voters, Charleston Assembly
received both the Rainbow Dad and
Mother Advisor of the year awards.
(see Grand Pics) Since Grand we have tried to stay
active; it is hard rounding everybody up during the
summer. However, along with the other Assemblies,
Charleston had a GREAT time at Kings Island on
August 8, 2008. Of course, as everyone knows the trip
was sponsored by the Order of the Eastern Star (OES).
Our Assembly decided to take a “Thank You!” picture
for Mrs. Wright and the OES and all those who were
responsible for making the trip possible. (see pic)
Our current Worthy Advisor, Caraline Griffith,
wanted to concentrate on community service during
her term. So we have been putting our “hearts to
God and our hands to work.” On one occasion we
delivered fresh flowers to Heartland Nursing Home.
(Thanks to Ms. King for the beautiful flowers.) Then
Mother Advisor of the year with new initiate,
Bill Miller,
Rainbow “Dad” of the Year 2008
we got together at the Dairy Queen to eat Blizzards. All
proceeds that day were going to the Children’s Miracle
Network. It was a rough job, but you do what you have
to do to help. (Ha, Ha!) (see picture)
We also went camping this summer after Grand
with Capital Chapter Demolay. Everyone had a great
time! There was lots of swimming, 4-wheeling and
roasting marshmallows. I think we need a Tide pen!

District #3 went well in November. Our own
Jessica Eads presided as District Worthy Advisor and
Christa Frazier was installed later in the day. During
District, Charleston Assembly had two girls initiated,
Brittney and Tiffany Reavis. Welcome, girls!!!! We
are working on scheduling more activities and more
Community Service opportunities. Drop in and see us
if you can.
On a Sad note, Charleston Assembly would like to
“Say Goodbye” to Doy Maston, Ms. King’s late fiancé.
Mr. Maston was appreciated for all that he did for not
only Charleston Assembly, but the other organizations
that he supported. The attached picture shows Mr.
Maston and Ms. King in Mr. Maston’s antique truck,
which Charleston Assembly rode in during the Veteran’s
Day Parade. He will surely be missed.

tory of the candy cane, taken from
www.about.com. Merry Christmas!
Birth of the Candy Cane
The origin of the candy cane
goes back more than 350 years.
The original candy was straight and
completely white in color. The first
historical reference to the familiar
cane shape goes back to 1670 when
the choirmaster at the Cologne
Cathedral in Germany bent the
sugar-sticks into canes to represent
a shepherd’s staff. The all-white
candy canes were given out to chil-
dren during the nativity services.
The clergymen’s custom of hand-
ing out candy canes during Christ-
mas services spread throughout
Europe and later to America. The
canes were still white, but some-
times the candy-makers would add
sugar-roses to decorate the canes
further.
The first historical reference to
the candy cane being in America
goes back to 1847 when a German
immigrant decorated the Christmas
tree in his Wooster, Ohio, home
with candy canes.
The Stripes
About fifty years later the first
red-and-white striped candy canes
appeared. No one knows who exact-
ly invented the stripes, but Christ-
mas cards prior to the year 1900
showed only all-white candy canes.
Christmas cards after 1900 showed
illustrations of striped candy canes.
Around the same time, candy-mak-
ers added peppermint and winter-
green flavors to their candy canes,
and those flavors then became the
traditional favorites.
