Life is good!! Life is definitely what you make it. It is so much about how you react to the situations at hand that arise every day. Life is not full of problems, just situations you need to figure out how to resolve. Deal with situations and dont back away from them, and certainly dont ignore them. Hint: they dont go away on their own. Address them, make them right and move on. And this too shall pass. One of the old family sayings that I love so much. So true. Sometimes things dont make sense. And sometimes we are just not meant to figure out everything. Tackle what you can to make your life better, and what doesnt involve you, dont include just to add chaos to your life. KISS Keep It Simple Sweetie!! Life is good!! We hope you enjoy this issue of the Otis Gazette as much as we enjoy preparing it for you. MILITARY FACTOID: WWII - The D-Day Invasion at Normandy June 6, 1944 D-Day planning was classed as 'Most Secret' and took place at Norfolk House in London's St James's Square. The building had a private bar installed so staff could talk freely without risking loose talk in local pubs. An invading army had not crossed the unpredictable, dangerous English Channel since 1688, 256 years later. The D in D-Day stands for day since the final invasion date was unknown and weather dependent. There are 9,386 graves in the American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Roberta J. Sarnacki, Chief of Police Otis Police Department, 1 North Main Road, Otis, MA 01253 All In a Days Work (413)-269-0100, ext. 6 th Today is Memorial Day. May 27 , 2013. Many of rsarnacki@gmail.com you are probably attending parades or ceremonies Office hours: Wed 7 PM-8:30 PM honoring our Veterans. Others are enjoying cookouts or maybe cruising on the (Or by Appointment)
lake, since the sun finally decided to make an appearance. The Otis Fire and Police Departments participated in Memorial Day festivities in both Sandisfield and Otis on Sunday, and the Otis Fire Department went to the Lee ceremony earlier today. They took their fully restored Buffalo truck, and they also took their new Rescue truck. This afternoon was likely earmarked for a little down time for all. But at 2:13, I received a phone call from Berkshire Sheriffs Control Dispatch. Two juveniles were lost in the woods, the dispatcher reported, somewhere behind Klondike Campground. They were visiting their grandparents, and had set out on a walk, originally on a trail. Then they lost the trail, but continued to walk, and at this point they had been walking for over three hours. I put my uniform on, texted Officer Pettibone to grab the cruiser and meet me, and off we went. Several fire department units signed on, and the ambulance as well. Someone even responded with the all-terrain vehicle from the East Otis station. While some fire units began to gather at the Klondike, myself and some other fire personnel began to head up West Center Road, towards the rear of Klondike. I was able to make phone contact with one of the kids, a 13 year old girl. My first thought was to ask her if she had a smart phone, and could download a map or navigation application so that I could walk her through on how to get her GPS coordinates. She had one of the old flip-style phones, however, so that wasnt going to work. I then sounded the siren from the area behind the transfer station, and headed towards Ed Jones Road. (Sorry to all of those neighbors who had no idea what I was doingdidnt mean to scare you.) When I got to Stebbins Road, the girl could hear the siren faintly. I then turned around, and made another pass. I found a spot on Stebbins Road where she said I sounded fairly close. Armed with my cell phone and my police radio, I made my way through a residents backyard, and she assisted me by telling me about the geography behind her house (thanks, Paula!). After searching that whole area, and calling her name, I began to follow a stream, as she told me that she was near a stream. Then, Officer Pettibone put out another siren further down, on Ed Jones Road. At this point, she called me and said that siren was the closest one yet. Officer Pettibone, and OFD members Richie Phair, John Kennedy, Jeff Hammerle, and Jordan Arnold all set out into the woods off of Ed Jones Road. A short time later, the girl called my cell phone and told me that she could hear people calling her name. I told her to yell back to them, which she did. She said that they were getting closer and closer. By 3:20, Officer Pettibone had reached her, and began to lead them out of the woods. The location where Officer Pettibone went in was about a mile from where he came out. The terrain that the searchers covered was swampy, buggy, and there were no real trails. The kids were loaded into the Otis ambulance, which was stationed on Ed Jones Road and was being manned by Dave Pickhardt. They were checked over briefly, and were then delivered back to their mother and grandparents at the Klondike. A days work, accomplished in just over an hour. Most of these guys will go back to their regular jobs tomorrow. It was great to see so many people responding to help, Meadow Farm giving up part of their Memorial Day. But then again, that 1125 Meadow St., POB 393, is what they do. Thanks to OFD members: Sandy, Richie, South Lee, MA 01260 Anthony, John, Tim, Don, Jeff, Luke, Jordan, Chris and B.J. humans, we all tend to under estimate how much we eat and over estimate how much exercise we get. The exercise part can be easier than you think. For instance if you park your car at the far end of the parking lot and walk for 2 minutes to your office, then climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator, you have 5 minutes of exercise already and your day has just begun! WRITE THAT DOWN! You can get 10 minutes in even before you leave the house if you march or jog in place while brushing your teeth, followed by lunge walking around the house as you gather your clothes, make coffee, and wake up the kids. This is a great habit to start off your day! How about packing a lunch the night before of left-over chicken on top of a green salad, or a hardboiled egg, fruit and veggies with humus? Get creative here - it's only for 30 days! You already know that fast food is unhealthy for you. You just have to decide that you are going to take the time to make your

BERKSHIRE TRAVELERS
Last November, we arrived in Otis and soon realized what an abundance of outdoor activities, places to visit and things to do awaits us throughout the Berkshires. Having lived in Brooklyn for so long and mostly away from the natural world, we were excited to now enjoy the natural wonders of this region. Not much time passed until we got to know Angel and Tyler, and when we told them about how we are spending our free time, they asked us if we would like to share our adventures with the readers of the Otis Gazette. We were thrilled and didnt need much time to think about it and here it is, our first Berkshire Travelers contribution. We hope you enjoy reading it and maybe get inspired to seek out all of the exciting ways of enjoying the beauty of our backyard. Enjoy the month of June, Thom and Evelyn Garvey

on the mountain in 1850, were surprised by a thunderstorm and needed to run for cover in a boulder cave where they ended up in a conversation that reportedly inspired some of Melvilles ideas for his novel Moby Dick. And in 1815, the poet William Cullen Bryant wrote Monument Mountain, an account of the story of a Mohican woman whose forbidden love for her cousin made her jump from the summit which is now called Squaw Peak. In the poem, Mohicans created a heap of stones on the spot where she was buried, giving the mountain its name Mountain of the Monument. On your way back down an easy, less steep way down , you will get the opportunity to pay a short visit to Devil's Pulpit, a free-standing pillar of stone which offers more great views and is accessible via a small path that branches off the Squaw Peak Trail to the left. Coming back from the Pulpit, you continue to walk down, still on the Squaw Peak Trail, until you hit the Indian Monument Trail (make a left!), a former carriage road, which will lead you down the mountain through the forest on more comfortable, broader slopes. Without racing up the mountain, this hike will probably take you about 2 hours maybe 2.5 hours, depending on how much time you want to spend at the top. We loved it and will definitely come back to conquer the peak again! To get more information on Monument Mountain, directions and to look at or download the trail map, visit http://www.thetrustees.org/places-tovisit/berkshires/monument-mountain.html. The meeting was called to order by Brian Crandall at 6:30 pm in the Town Hall conference room. It was announced the meeting was being recorded. Present: Selectman Brian Crandall, Hal Kobrin, Tom Ragusa, Fire Chief Sandy Pinkham, Jim Crandall, Select Board chairwoman Roberta Sarnacki, Russ Loring, Michael Ernst Historical: They have two outstanding projects the placement of the Wolcott Rock, and putting stone & gravel around the 65 Mile Marker. This last project may be a good candidate for a Community Project for the Boy Scouts. The Wolcott Rock needs a base pad for placement of the rock. No quorum for the last couple of meetings. Planning Board: They are continuing with the Technical Assistance Grant. BRPC now has maps with slopes, best possible
routes, and are looking to add overlays of the houses who owns what, how old the homes are, how old the systems are, etc. Planning is still working on the Medical Marijuana Moratorium, still looking into the Community Preservation Act, and is still working with Historical. Maintenance: They are currently working on the fire house project, doing spring cleanups, and putting in the well at the WWT plant. They received a $2400 grant and have spent the funds on personal protection equipment for both WWTP and Maintenance. Fire Dept.: Calls are quiet. They trained with DCR in Tolland last week on forest and wildland fires, and have more training classes coming up next week as well. The new Rescue Truck is at a district show in Indiana we figured they might as well since

we dont yet have room for it here. We negotiated getting a 9000 pound winch for the truck in exchange for them demonstrating it at the show. The winch was something we had wanted for the truck but couldnt afford previously. Technology: RICOH came in to do an analysis of the land and sewer maps we have on file as well as what Lyn needs to have backed up downstairs. We are waiting for them to give us an estimate of the cost to begin digitally backing up these documents so we have access to them in case of disaster or wear and tear. We may be able to encumber some FY2013 funds to begin the project if we get the quote in time. Assessors: They have finally received preliminary certification from DOR and are now sending out the valuation change notices, so they hope to have the final tax rate ready to be set within the next three to four weeks. The impact notice was published last Friday in the Berkshire Eagle.
Police Dept.: They recently participated in Defensive Tactics Training and Legal Updates. First Responder training is coming up. The Kops N Kids program was a big success this year. They had forty kids go on the trip to Mystic Aquarium, which was a good trip. The call volume has remained consistent and they are working on a few open investigations. Finance Board: They have completed their annual budget review. T h e meeting was adjourned at 6:47 pm. ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~
