2012
The Mulherin Foundation has had a good year. Our first task was to define ourselves clearly, incorporating the resources available to us from Athens Orthopedic Clinic and the community represented by the members of the board. Lori Lord's leadership helped us get this off to a good start, but her biggest contribution was to hire Jessica Cooper. Jessica did a canvass of the Athens area non-profit agencies involved in health care, talked to a lot of people and brought to us a plan which we adopted. Our aim is now clear, and she has begun the process of making it happen. The next big task is outlining and enacting a fund raising plan to make it all happen. The board is excited by the progress we have made and we are looking forward to a successful year in 2013.
Sincerely,
Peter Rice

about mulherin
the foundation
Established in 2012 by Athens Orthopedic Clinic, The William B. Mulherin Foundation for Health & Wellness was founded in honor of Athens Orthopedic Clinics founder, Dr. William Butch Mulherin. The vision for the Mulherin Foundation was to create an outlet for the community to help provide accessible orthopedic resources to individuals who needed it most and the organizations that serve these individuals. After less than one year in existence, the Mulherin Foundation has started funding a Nutrition Counseling Program for orthopedic patients through Mercy Health Center. The Mulherin Foundation has also joined the Athens Health Network in an their attempt to improve health and reduce healthcare disparities of the uninsured and underinsured in Athens-Clarke County. This membership will allow the Foundation greater access to the true needs of our community.

resource assistance program
The Mulherin Foundation uses the Resource Assistance Program as a giving outlet to support the orthopedic needs of local organizations and individuals who are uninsured or underserved specifically in Athens-Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe County. In 2012, the Mulherin Foundation began supporting two programs in Athens. The Athens Community Council on Aging received start-up funding for its Hospital Meal Discharge Program that will help provide nutritious meals for recently discharged orthopedic surgery patients. Mercy Health Center received funding for a Nutrition Counseling Program for orthopedic patients to help alleviate common orthopedic problems and increase their chances of being a candidate for orthopedic surgery.
