VASHI Stressing on the need to plant more trees to save our environment, CIDCO Chairman Nakul Patil urged people to take the lead to do their bit towards preserving our ecology for future generations and minimize the negative impact of humanization. He was speaking during a function held at CIDCO Bhavan in Belapur on Friday to celebrate World Environment Day . The function was attended by CIDCO Director Namdeo Bhagat, chief guest Parth Bapat, Chief Architect and Planner MD Lele, Chairman of CIDCO Employees Union Nilesh Tandel, general secretary Milind Bagul and CIDCO Engineers Association general secretary Deepak Madke.

MLA Sandeep Naik takes up the broom to clean Vashi bus depot

VASHI Airoli MLA Sandeep Naik and Navi Mumbai Mayor Sagar Naik along with hundreds of activists cleaned the Vashi bus depot on Saturday to launch the Green Movement, 2010, a tree plantation and cleanliness drive launched by Green Hope, an NGO headed by Sandeep Naik. Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik also participated in the drive held at Digha. In past two years, we have received good response from the people. Green Hope has successfully planted one lakh trees in 2008 and doubled it to two lakh trees in 2009. Similarly, this year too we will be planting two lakh trees of various species in the city considering the geographical location and quality of soil, Sandeep Naik said. The NGO has planned to plant the trees which will benefit all such as in housing societies medicinal plants like Kadipatta and Bakul will be planted while in industrial areas, Silver Oak, Bahava and Karanja which

Four Points staffers take to the streets!

Falguni Banerjee. VASHI On a day when the civic body has failed to do its bit for the environment, Hotel Four Points by Sheraton took the lead and set a fine example for residents of Navi Mumbai. All the staff of the hotel wore gloves and caps and took to the street, not to protest but clean up the road leading to Vashi Station. Leaving their inhibitions behind, the employees picked up brooms and garbage collection bags to pick all the trash thrown by passengers on the roadsides. Not just this, they also distributed saplings amongst passengers at Vashi Railway Station. The cleanliness drive was held as part of the hotels first anniversary celebrations. All the proud Four Pointers came out on the street flaunting their t-shirts and swept and cleaned the entire pavement from Vashi Station to Assam Bhavan. 100 saplings were distributed to passersby, office-goers, stall operators and even to policemen. Residents and passengers welcomed this gesture and responded by picking a sapling. The team celebrated its effort by relishing special refreshments at the stalls.

In schools and colleges, saplings of mango, chickoo and jackfruit will be planted while those of Kadamb, Banyam and Mahogany will be planted along the roads that provide shelter. The Green Hopes aim is not only to plant and preserve the trees but its objective is to ensure that the environment protection becomes the priority of city residents, Naik said. On June 10, various competitions will be held for students like essay competition on topics like Environment Protection and Clean-Green Navi Mumbai. Similarly, for elders drawing, slogan writing and photography competitions will be organised.

Team India should go to China

t is very sad to know that Team India wont participate in the 16th Asian Games in China. This was the first time that Cricket was included in the Asian Games and it was a great opportunity for our team to play for a medal for the country . But unfortunately, we wont be able to see the medals in our countrys name, Thanks to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). BCCI has given excuse that due to International commitments the team will not be able to participate in the Asian Games. It was known from long time that Asian Games is to be held in November 2010, then why did they put in some fixtures during that period. Even the players would have wanted to play for the medal, its such a proud feeling to win medal for the country . The BCCIs decision does not come as a surprise either because they had always chosen to not participate in any event that comes under the aegis of the Indian

Olympic Association (IOA). I agree to Harsha Bhogales thoughts of sending any one senior player to lead the second string team in China, it could be Sourav Ganguly , Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble or Laxman. And you never know we can bag a bronze medal as well. Olympic medal winners Abhinav Bindra, Vijender Singh and Bhaichung Bhutia have expressed their disappointment over this decision and are still saying that if BCCI wants, we can still send our team in China. Not men but atleast womens team con go and play in China. Playing for medals for our country is absolutely a different feeling. Its sad if BCCI is not willing to send either of the teams, we could lose two medals, which could have been most memorable for our country as well.
