Capacity growth slowed Sales for the Passenger Airline Group rose year on year by 3.4 per cent in November. As capacity growth (+6.2%) was reduced again, the load factor for the first month of the winter flight plan stabilised at 73.7 per cent. As throughout the year to date, this was 2.0 percentage points lower than last year. Development in the pricing environment was stable. In short-haul traffic the additional capacity of 7.4 per cent was nearly sold in full (+6.4%). On long-haul routes sales increased in nearly all regions. Sales on transatlantic routes were up by 4.2 per cent with the load factor remaining stable. On Asian routes sales growth only came to 1.3 per cent, partly due to the flooding catastrophe in Bangkok. Lufthansa Passenger Airlines (+4.0%) and SWISS (+2.2%) reported modest sales increases compared with last year, while both companies slowed capacity growth. Additional capacity of 6.9 per cent at Lufthansa Passenger Airlines was a quarter lower than last month, despite the opening of the new runway in Frankfurt. Austrian Airlines also registered clear sales growth of 4.9 per cent but saw its load factor fall by 3.0 percentage points. Germanwings achieved a slight sales increase of 1.3 per cent and maintained a stable load factor (-0.3 pts.), whereas sales at British Midland decreased further by -5.3 per cent. The expected market softening and the night flight ban in Frankfurt caused Lufthansa Cargo to cut capacity by 3.0 per cent and sales decreased by 5.2 per cent compared with last year. Lufthansa with new setup at Berlin Airport When the Berlin-Brandenburg airport opens in June 2012 Lufthansa will be stationing 15 aircraft from the A320 family in the capital; in total 23 Lufthansa Airbus aircraft will be deployed on routes to and from Berlin. The route network here has been expanded and now offers 38 non-stop connections, with 28 new destinations in Europe and two in the Middle East. The new setup in Berlin features a homogenous modern fleet, staff cost advantages and highly productive flight schedules. This means that unit costs can be cut by around a third compared with the existing cost structure in Lufthansa's European traffic. First landing for the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental Lufthansa and Boeing tested the ground processes for the new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental at Frankfurt Airport from 6 to 9 December to prepare for the aircraft's smooth introduction into the long-haul fleet in early 2012. Lufthansa has ordered 20 of the 747-8 Intercontinental aircraft, which boast double-digit percentage improvements in fuel efficiency and CO 2 emissions per passenger. The new aircraft is also a considerable improvement on its predecessor in terms of noise emissions, with a 30 per cent reduction in its noise footprint.
