Part-B Answer any Two Questions

2 x 16 = 32 marks

1. Design a cotter joints to supports a load varying from 30KN in compression to 30KN in tension. The material used is carbon steel for which the following allowable stresses may be used. The load is applied statically. t=50 Mpa, c=90Mpa,=35Mpa. (Or) 2. Design of knuckle joints to transmit 150 KN.the design stresses may be taken as 75 Mpa in tension 60 Mpa in shear and 150 Mpa in compression.

3. The cylinder head of the steam engine with 250mm bore is fastened by eight stud bolts made of 30C8 steel. Maximum pressure inside the cylinder is 1Mpa.determine the bolt size and approximate tightening torque. Take 20% load. Assume y=300Mpa for bolt material. (Or) 4. Two plates of 7mm thick are connected by a triple riveted lap joints of zig zag pattern .calculate the rivet diameter, rivet pitch and distance between rows of rivets for the joints also state the modes of failure of the joints. the safe working stresses are as follows.t=90 Mpa, c=120Mpa,=60Mpa.

3. A cast iron cylinder head is fastened to a cylinder of 500mm bore with 8 stud bolts. The maximum pressure inside the cylinder is 2 Mpa. The stiffness of part is thrice the stiffness of the bolt. What should be the tightening load so that the point is leak proof at maximum pressure? Assume y=300Mpa for bolt material. (Or)

4. Design a double riveted butt joint with two cover plates for the longitudinal seam(line where two edges join) of a boiler shell 1.5m in diameter subjected to a steam pressure of 0.95Mpa .assume joint efficiency as 75%. the safe working stresses are as follows.t=90 Mpa, c=140Mpa,=56Mpa.
