tethered animals closely and avoid tethering them close
to the bush. Secure your chicken coop well and keep your
birds in at night as well. Tere have been three reports
to the Conservation Of cers so far this year concerning
coyotes in the city of Nelson.
On another note ... the local cherries are almost ripe and
soon there will be cherries rotting on the ground. It is a
familiar message: pick your fruit so that you do not attract
bears to the neighbourhood. Bears love fruit and will come
close to homes to gain access to any fruit we make available
to them. But were you aware that other wildlife, including
coyotes, skunks, raccoons and deer feed on wind fall fruit?
Check out the remote camera videos of coyotes and bears
feeding on the cherries that have fallen to the road (on the
WildSafeBC Nelson Facebook page). Picking fruit and
not leaving it to rot on the ground is an important factor
in avoiding bringing bears, coyotes, deer, raccoons, skunks
and other wildlife too close to our homes.
It is illegal to allow wildlife access to garbage and other at-
tractants. Tere are now signifcant fnes for this ofence under
the Wildlife Act. Nelson also has a wildlife attractant bylaw
that regulates the presence of wildlife attractants in the city.

attractants near your home by visiting www.wildsafebc.

ordinator, at nelson@wildsafebc.com.

When You Hear Te Coyotes Call,
Do You Tink Of Your Pets?
Coyotes are skillful predators that feed on all types of
rodents, but do you realize that coyotes can also prey on
cats and dogs? Tempting dogs into the bush to kill and
eat them is a common coyote practice as is stalking and
chasing down cats. So when you hear the coyotes (or know
that they are in the area) keep your pets in at night. Watch

Your dogs home away

Al Magaw with two of his dogs - both came to the kennel with
problem behaviours. Ebony, the black lab was dangerous to
man and beast when he arrived from the shelter. At frst a
piece of plywood had to be used as a barrier between Al and
Ebony to feed or clean the kennel. Now both Ebony and Tara,
the Belgian shepherd, are therapy dogs for other dogs with
behaviour issues.

NELSON
520-C Falls Street
(above Savoy Bowling lanes)
Im Penny! I came to the Nelson branch when my owner was no
longer able to care for me, nothing bad, I swear! Just my food
and toys and stuf got a little too expensive. Im a really good girl,
I really love to be around people. I usually like other dogs, too, but
when theyre of leash and they charge at me I can get nervous
and growl to try and make them go away. Cats are OK I guess; I
used to chase them but the cats here at the shelter are nice so I
leave them alone. If you want to meet me, make sure you call the
Nelson SPCA frst at 250-352-7178, to make sure Im there!

Kaslo And Te Missing Link
Wait! Put down that wooden club. Tis article carries
no refection on the genetic inheritance of the worthy
citizens of Kaslo. Many of you have enjoyed the magnif-
cent magenta covered bridge, curving over our rushing
waters. Well, watch out Madison County. Te missing
link is a roof over the 5th Street Unity Bridge, complet-
ing the 5 Kilometre river trail loop along the Kaslo River.
Te missing link is also your Tweets, Facebook likes,
and supportive comments on the Kaslo Trailblazers nom-
ination page. At the moment 39 communities in British
Columbia are vying to be chosen as fnalists on June 30 to
be eligible to win $25,000 on the Kraf Celebration Tour.
Your popular support on the social media and the Trail-
blazer website will ensure we get a chance in the fnal vot-
ing July 8-20. We did it with the logging sports renewal
and, with your support, we can triumph again.
To nominate, go to www.http://www.krafcelebration-
tour.ca/en/nominate/profle/kaslo-trailblazers-society/
Pilot Bay Lighthouse
Painting Project Completed
On May 9, a group of 7 volunteers gathered to start
the task of painting the outside of the historic Pilot Bay
Lighthouse. Between May 9 and June 5, seven diferent
crews comprising a total of 18 people from as far away as
Castlegar and Ymir put in 160 hours to complete the job
of painting the shingles, railings and metal roofng. Te
building had last been painted in 2006 afer Joern Win-
genders Traditional Timber Framing Company fnished a
complete reshingling and restoration of the building.
Constructed in 1904, the lighthouse went into operation
in January of 1905. With the increased marine traf c that
accompanied the settlement of the area, the lighthouse
performed a critical service during stormy weather and
the shortened days of winter. Te light was turned of June
30, 1993 despite ...opposition from all around Kootenay
Lake and throughout the region (from Susan Hullands
Te History of Pilot Bay Lighthouse). As part of a user
group coalition agreement with BC Parks, the lighthouse
was saved from dismantling and BC Parks undertook to
have the land and building returned to provincial juris-
diction. For their part of the agreement, the Friends of
West Kootenay Parks Society agreed to help maintain the
building and access trail.
Te Pilot Bay Lighthouse is now a part of the tourism
marketing strategy of the East shore, featured in tourist
brochures. It is easily accessed from Pilot Bay Road (ap-
prox 4 km from the ferry landing) by a 10 to 15 minute
walk on a trail that winds up a slight grade through second
growth cedar-hemlock forest. About halfway up, look for
an old trail on the right that once led to the old Pilot Bay
townsite. Tis is the trail that Jean Montreuil would have
taken daily in the early days to tend the lighthouse lamp.
The History of Pilot Bay Lighthouse, by Susan Hulland is
available locally at the Gill and Gif, Coles, Otter Books,
Moyie Gif Shop, Gray Creek Store and the Kokanee Creek
Visitor Centre (July and August). For more information
about the Friends of West Kootenay Parks Society, visit

Slocan Lake Dance Camp
Once again, New Denver welcomes dancers from
around the region for the annual Slocan Lake Dance
Camp. Set for Tursday, July 25 through Sunday, July 28,
the camp this year welcomes an instructor from south of
the border.
Ari Levitt teaches in the greater Seattle area and teach-
es nationally and internationally. He made the Kootenay
connection while teaching some friendly Rossland dan-
cers on a cruise last winter.
Levitt brings his unique fusion style with oferings such
as Tangod Up in Blues, Swing Fusion and Cross-Step
Waltz. Local dancers will be sure to fnd him warm, en-
thusiastic and knowledgeable.
Te Dance Camp now in its ninth year ofers thirty-one
day time workshops, two evening classes and three evening
dances. Dancers can choose only one or two workshops or
attend all four days. Workshops are ofered in most trad-
itional styles such as East coast swing, cha cha and waltz
along with country-two step and Argentine tango.
So whether you are brand new to dance or a seasoned
dancer, there is something for you. Sharon Sebo of Tango
Kelowna will return this year along with Michael Wiebe
of Calgary, Randy Tapp of Cranbrook and Lyle Clarke of
Edmonton. Each brings their unique talents.
At the Friday night polka dot party and the Saturday
dine and dance, several of the instructors will dance for
our entertainment. Mixers, prizes and special refresh-
ments will add to the fun.
Pack up the camper and your dance shoes and come
on to New Denver: buf out your dance style, reconnect
with your dance friends and enjoy this pristine area. Visit
www.slocanlakedancecamp.ca for full details. Please note
the Early Bird deadline is Monday, July 8.
To Place Your Ad Call 1-800-663-4619
WRITING A CLASSIFIED AD THAT WORKS!
Put yourself in the buyers shoes. What details would you
want to know about an item you were interested in buying?
Include the brand name (manufacturers spend mil-
lions promoting the name and enhancing the image
of their products, so take advantage of it). Would you
rather buy a refrigerator or a Frigidaire?
List the items best features and what makes your
item different from others in the same category. (Re-
member, the more you tell, the clearer picture a po-
tential buyer gets, making it easier for you to sell.)
Take time to research pricing for your article so that
you price it reasonably (overpriced items may not re-
ceive calls).
Include your phone number and the best times to call.
Ask for the sale...one gentleman put BUY THIS CAR! in his
ad and was pleasantly surprised by the response to his ad!
