WHY SUPPORT A NEW FIRE HALL ON MAY 11? A new
re hall will increase property tax on the area D home
of my partner and myself by up to $142 per year; BUT
the existing re hall fails so many legislated codes that
discontinuation of our re protection service is a dis-
tinct possibility. Without re protection our annual house
insurance cost would rise from $513 to $1182. The math is
pretty simple. Allyn Steward.

Jay Martell passed
away Wednesday morning,
February 13, 2013. He was
born in Whitehorse on
June 5, 1946 and grew up
in Vancouver. As a teen he
moved with his family to
Kimberley. Jay settled in
Argenta in 1974 and for the
last few years lived part time
in Kaslo as well as Argenta.
Jay worked to make a bet-
ter world. He was part of the
founding of the Green Party
of BC, studied Re-evaluative
Counselling and led work-
shops, he helped establish a
Nonviolent Resource Cen-
tre and was a member of the
Kootenay Co-operative Land
Settlement Society in Argenta
as well as various other kinds
of co-ops.
He was a gentle giant with
a deep infectious laugh and
kind nature. Jay loved to
dance and his long limbs
waving in the breeze in the
front of the Kaslo Jazz Festival
is a memory for hundreds
of folks. Local dance bands
appreciated Jay's presence at
their venues as they could
count on him to be dancing.
Jay was never on the sidelines;
one local musician called Jay
the "designated dancer".
Appreciations to the staf of
Victorian Community Health
Centre of Kaslo and Jays many
friends who helped make his
last days comfortable. Jay will
be remembered and missed
by many.
Love from your friends.

Hicks On Sticks Screening
In the summer of 1999, a team of four skateboarders and
two bands embarked on a life changing tour. Te goal was to
inspire kids in rural areas by exposing them to skateboarding
and music they wouldnt otherwise have an opportunity to see
in person. Everyone on board grew up in small towns them-
selves so the tour was afectionately dubbed Hicks On Sticks.
Towing a 5,000 pound portable skateboard park behind
an old van with failing brakes, the young team traveled
nearly 3,000 km through the mountains of Western Can-
ada putting on eight shows. Te only fnancial sponsor
dropped out shortly before the tour began but plans went
ahead. Long standing friendships were inevitably tested by
the long hauls and lack of money.
Te flm features the skateboarding of two Kootenay natives:
the late Canadian professional skateboarder Josh Evin, and
Eugene Voykin. It also tracks the dramatic peaks and valleys of
Kootenay born and raised Ian Comishins skateboarding com-
pany, PM Skateboards. Combining
original footage of the tour with old
home videos and recent interviews,
the flm spans two decades in the
lives of these young men.
Te screenings will take place
one night only at Te Old Te-
atre, (185 Columbia Avenue) in
Castlegar on Saturday, March 2
from 6:30 to 9 pm. Tickets are
$10 and will be frst come frst
serve at the door. Hicks on Sticks
Indiegogo funders get in free.
Te Director, Soren Johnstone,
and one of the skaters, Eugene
Voykin will be in attendance.
Tere will be a pre-screening
skate jam at the Castlegar Com-
plex skate park on the day of the
screening from 3 pm to 5:30 pm
with a shuttle bus to the theatre
for the 6:30 pm screening.
