THREE STATES OF MATTER

SOLID

SHAPE and VOLUME of Solid, Liquid, and Gas

Has definite shape and definite volume

LIQUID
Takes the shape of its container, and has definite volume

GAS
Takes the shape of its container, and has negligible volume

Solid vibrate but generally do not move from place to place.

Liquid vibrate, move about, and slide past each other.

Gas vibrate and move freely at high speeds.

MOVEMENT OF MOLECULES IN SOLID, IN LIQUID AND IS GAS

HOW DO PARTICLES ARRANGE IN SOLID, IN LIQUID, AND IN GAS?

Gas particles are well separated with no regular arrangement.
Liquid particles are close together with no regular arrangement. Solid particles are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern.

ARRANGEMENT OF MOLECULES

Closely packed
Definite shape and volume Generally do not move from place to place

Far from each other

Takes the shape of its container and has definite volume

Very far from each other

Takes the shape of its container, has negligible volume

MOVEMENT OF PARTICLES

Move about, and slide past each other

Move freely at high speeds

Properties

Physical properties of matter are characteristics by which we describe matter and which can be determined without changing its identity.

Some physical properties of matter cannot be applied in all phases of matter.

There are too many physical properties of matter. Here are some of the physical properties of matter.

Physical Properties of Matter

Mass
Mass is the amount of matter Its SI unit for mass is grams (g)

Physical Properties of Matter

Volume
Volume is the space occupied by matter.

The SI unit for Volume is Liters (L)

Physical Properties of Matter

Solubility
Solubility is the ability of a solid to dissolve in a liquid.

Physical Properties of Matter Miscibility

Miscibility is the ability of liquid to dissolve in another liquid

Physical Properties of Matter Hardness

Hardness is the property of a solid to resist compression or scratching

Physical Properties of Matter

Malleability
Malleability is the ability of a metal to be flattened into thin sheets

Physical Properties of Matter Melting Point

Melting Point is the temperature which a substance begins to change from solid to liquid

Physical Properties of Matter Boiling Point

Boiling Point is the temperature which a substance begins to bubble up and change form liquid to gas.

Physical Properties of Matter Conductivity

Conductivity is the ability of some materials to conduct heat or electricity

Physical Properties of Matter Ductility

Ductility is the ability of some materials to be drawn into wires

Physical Properties of Matter Brittleness

Brittleness is the property of some materials that makes them easily break or crumble to pieces

Physical Properties of Matter Flexibility

Flexibility is the ability of a solid to bend without breaking
