Indian press is dependent The Indians journalist call themselves free, they speak with proud about the

freedom of expression and how it has always been emphasised as an essential basis for the democratic functioning of a society according to the People's Union for Civil Liberties in an essay about the freedom of press. This is only an interpretation of the freedom of expression. Actually the Indian press is dependent and should improve, they have not a freedom of press law, are not ensure of their own freedom and are influenced by lenders. In Indian Constitution there are no regulations for press freedom. It speaks only of the freedom of speech and expression. Indian Constitution says that all citizens have the right to freedom of speech and expression. Indian journalists rely on the freedom of speech and expression but in reality it is not enough, because it does not specifically address the rights of a journalist. For a journalist, independence is a core concept. The Netherlands has Article 7 of the Constitution; it lists the rules regarding press freedom. It says that you as journalists do not need permission to publish and that journalists are not required to show you the publication in advance. Without this law a journalist is not independent and you get limited in your freedom. Reporters Without Border, an international organisation which protects journalists and works to ensure freedom of press, has put India at the 122 spot in 2010 in terms of freedom of press compared to 105 in 2009. The press freedom index indicates how much freedom it enjoys worldwide and had last year 178 participating countries. Just last month in India two photographers were beaten by police. Also the Indian freedom of information activist and blogger Shehla Masood the same month got shot by a bullet in the neck. The last message in the Netherlands that has to do with press freedom is from 2009 and it is about censoring the pictures of the royal family. As a journalist it is affecting your way of working and you are (unconsciously) tend to censor yourself. The industry tries to influence journalists and journalistic companies. This can be successfully for the business community, because they are the income of the journalistic companies. A growing trend of advertisery journalism is being witnessed in India. The growing economy and the new (commercial) sources of income for journalism is a deadly combination. This is also related to self-censorship. A journalistic employer can choose to not publishing a certain piece, because your newspaper is sponsored by that company. You can not criticize for instance Opel and have an advert of Opel next to that piece. This affects your freedom and especially your independence. This was discussed during the press freedom day in India, May 3. Experts believe that influences from the business are a threat to press freedom. Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in chief of IBN 18 network and president of Editors Guild of India, voiced concern about manipulation of media by some people for their own interests. The Indian press should improve because they are still dependent. In the journalistic world it is all about freedom and independency. The Indian government has to define the

rights of a journalist in the Constitution. Even the government does not respect these journalists at this moment. If the journalists would be respected they would not got beaten by the police. India has a long way to go to be eventually number 1 on the press freedom index.
