Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one and complete the following task. You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required. You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues. From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen production and detail how you would source them. For example Type Importance Sourcing

Finance: Sources of finance

Equipment Transport Talent Crew Materials Facility hire

Importance It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order to produce a professional looking advert. Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment will be needed and these cost a lot of money. Sourcing Crew Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/location-productionsupport/ Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production Facility http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/ can be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and sound engineer. Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets or studio Props Materials departments Transport can be sourced via Transport for London http://www.tfl.gov.uk, Transport National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk, hertz car hire etc.. A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per person.

List of all items that need detailing You can either create your own table or upload this one to Weebly and complete. Either way, a table like the one below needs to be used. Finance: Sources of finance

Equipment Transport Talent Crew Materials Facility hire

Importance Financing throughout a project is vitally important because of your budget. Budget's for project can vary from nothing to millions of pounds and between all of those amounts, you need to budget your money or you will over and under spend. Over spending on a budget is bad because you'll have no more money to produce the project. The best way to budget is to figure out how much each section of production will cost. If it's a high end Hollywood action movie, then you'll have to pay for visual effect, and if you were making a social action documentary that would include the prime minister, it will cost a lot to organise a meeting with him and his requirements. Finance with production would also come under casting and crew. Each member of the crew would need to be paid and this has to be in the budget cuts. A good example where they didn't budget and it caused an effect of crew was with the new Life of Pi film where the Visual Artists were not paid due to too much recruitment and not enough money from the film. The way around problems such like this one would be to budget the production money properly. This is why it's important. Time:

Deadlines Availability

of equipment Availability of personnel (size of team; roles)

Importance The importance of time is the most important when it comes to working for a person or company. This is due to deadlines as deadlines will need to be met in the media industry. If deadlines are not met on a job, there could be serious consequences that could lead to you being removed from the project or even fired. Availability is also very important with timing due to people having different times of when they can do thing. An actor may not be able to act as the same day as everyone else and may have to work around a schedule. Availability can also apply for equipment, crew and production teams. If equipment cannot be met with times for a production team, then they will need to work around it and work out a schedule. Facilities:

Production equipment Postproduction equipment facility houses

Importance The importance of having facilities is so that you can produce and create your film/project. Without the facilities for the project, you wouldn't have the equipment, the post-production work, or the location to film. These things are all vitally important to the project and need to be accounted for separately. Facilities with location wouldn't be accountable for much of the same purpose as to equipment. This requires

planning that crew members would have to do. There will also have to be postproduction facilities for editing the footage which will come down to places of hire or using your own software from home. Software from home can cost rather a lot. Adobe Premire Pro cost 810 and this is still considered amateur editing software and wouldn't be used in high end Hollywood films. Sourcing POST-PRODUCTION: Adobe Premire Pro http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/premiere.html POST-PRODUCTION: Editing studio http://mallardproductions.com/ CREW FOR PRODUCTION: http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/location-production-support/ Materials:

Original materials, Archive and library materials Photolibrary materials Sound library materials, Internet Audio Script Interviews Costumes

Importance Original material is important because of its integrity between the film-maker and the audience. An audience will connect on the point they're trying to prove and if they're just using recycled material from other people to get their point across, it may not be as powerful. Saying this, you can take other people's footage and reuse it for certain ways of filmmaking that work well, such as documentary film-making. This would sometimes reuse footage found and most of this footage would be from an archive or a library. Footage is now also being found across the internet so people are using library footage less and less. Sound libraries will be important because of the wide range of sources they have. The internet can help will such a wide range of things and could help a film massively. Audio is important because without it you couldn't hear the production. Script is important so you know who is saying what and to follow along accordingly. Interviews could be important when it comes to trying to find out relevant information about a certain topic. Costumes would be very important on set because if you get it wrong, you could falsely portray the character wrong or create lots of continuity errors. Sourcing -No source for original footage -Library material can be found in a library and on the internet with an archive

-Internet source is from a computer or smart phone -Often recorded on location or in a recording studio after -Scripts are usually given to the cast and crew by the script-writers -Interviews can be recorded by yourself or found online, in magazines etc. -Costumes are usually rented from costume companies but can also be brought from them as well. You can also make costumes at home.

Locations:

Recces Limitations and risks: Distance, access, cost, weather

Importance Location recces are important because then you know the best spot for filming and the best spot for what would suit your scene. This will mean less time is delayed on deciding whether to film there or not. Limitations, risks, distance, cost and weather all need to be accounted for when thinking of location. Limitations of a location could be space. If you need to film somewhere with lots of space, you dont want to film in a cupboard. Risks would be dangerous hazards about the place that people need to look out for. Distance would be for the cast and crew, to see how they could get there and by what cost. Cost of the location or rent/hire can vary on the location but would come under the budget and shouldnt be messed about with too much. Weather is also vital as some places may have stronger weather than others and you may want a particular weather ni a certain location. Codes of practice and regulation:

Location permissions Clearances Copyright Health and safety Insurance

Importance The main important reason to have a location permit is because if youre found not to have one, you can be arrested on site. Pretty simple. Clearance is when companies give the all clear to what youre limited or not limited to do. This needs to be done because if you dont and get caught, you can face major legal issues. Copyright infringement is very serious because if you use someones work and you dont have permission, they can have the video removed and send you to court. Health and safety

is mainly due to all of the equipment and location and there are still laws around it that mean you have to be safe. An example of this is wearing a hard helmet on location if it is due unsafe. Insurance is important because in order to cover the damages of anything that may go wrong during production, this will claim legal credit over replacing or recovering it. Sourcing Location Permissions - http://industry.bfi.org.uk/publicspaces Copyrights - http://www.copyright.com/ Insurance - http://www.filminsurance.co.uk/ The below only requires you to discuss the importance Regulatory bodies:

Ofcom Press Complaints Commission (PCC) Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) Pan European Game Information (PEGI) Entertainme nt Software Rating Board (ESRB) British Board of Film Classification (BBFC)

Importance Ofcom makes sure that everything is regulated in the UK when it is being played on the television. This helps protect children from unwanted scenes and means nobody has any complaints. PCC is like Ofcom but just for newspapers and magazines. This means that there cannot be explicit imagery on the front page, but may include it throughout. ASA are another branch off of Ofcom but they regulate scenes before nine oclock for all adverts. PEGI is a rating system for video games which will provide the certificate that allows what age you play the game. This also makes sure there isnt too much graphic content. ESRB is the American branch of PEGI however age ranges change between them. BBFC regulates the covers for films and TV programs that have been released onto DVD. They also tell you what age you have to be to view the content of the DVD. Trade unions: Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (PACT), National Union of Journalists (NUJ)

Broadcastin g Entertainment Cinematogr aph and Theatre Union (BECTU) Importance PACT is the importance of this as it allows a lot of independent film and Tv companies to have a chance to be broadcasted against the main monopolies, it allows for the independent companies to display their product. Very useful for someone of a small standard. NUJ almost acts as a promotion for journalists and is important as instead of the journalists having fixed things to say, this allows them to have a freedom of speech and to express it to the country. Trade associations:

Entertainme nt and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) British Interactive Media Association (BIMA)

Importance ELSPA is the importance of games and how they cover all hacks and glitches throughout the games development. BIMA fixes all of the hack and glitches and then send out a new patch for the game.
