Song

Song title Hang Loose

Artist Alabama Shakes

Genre Rock, Blues, Sothern Rock, Soul,

What are the conventions of music videos from this genre?

The conventions of a normal rock music video are to have a conveying story line throughout the music video with occasional shots of the band playing the song. For my music video, Im not going to include the various shots of the band playing and Im only going to have the storyline of the music video. Im doing this because the song is 2:23 long and I dont feel as if this is enough time to create the storyline to its full potential and add in shots of the band as well. Another reason is that it would be very hard to find a band that could perform this song and then film them in the allocated time and for no money.

How are you going to meet these conventions in your video? Style (in-concert and as live footage; animation (stop motion, digital); interpretative;
narrative; impressionist; surrealist; pastiche; parody; referencing; homage)

The style of my music video is going to be a narrative story line. I have chosen this because I think narrative storylines are strong point of my film making ability and put this into my work. For my video, I think Im going to have a stylised theme of the 50s crossing with the 60s America.

Costume For costumes, Im going to be relating most of the costumes towards 1950s and 1960s America. This was a very particular style of leather and denim jackets and slicked back hair for guys. I can take inspiration for these with costumes from such people as James Dean and the Happy Days character The Fonz or Fonzie. For female costumes, I would be looking for floral and knee high dresses with neck tie scarves. Female inspiration for this could be taken from Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot.

Lighting

The lighting for the majority of this will be filmed during the day. This means that I will be relying on natural light. Other parts of the video will be filmed inside a shop. This will mean Ill be dependent on natural lighting and florescent lighting. These two can work together nicely when done correctly. Another part of the video will be filmed in a bedroom or a workshop. For this, I was thinking of having low lighting on a particular part of the bedroom/workshop for fixation of that particular thing. This could change throughout the filming process because of lighting problems or change of style of video. Locations

Locations for the music video will be filmed around Henley. This is because it is easily accessible for my actors and has a stylised theme Im looking for. I will also be filming inside a record shop. This is where the two main characters and subjects of the music video will meet. The last location will either be in a bedroom of a workshop.

Shot types Shot types that Im looking for are establishing shots, close ups and shot reverse shots. I may experiment with different shots when it comes to filming but this is what I will most likely be sticking to when I first start filming.

Lyrics
Insert the song lyrics below

Don't worry sweet baby! Don't you ever worry 'bout a thing. Put them worries on the shelf 'n' learn to love yourself Don't be your own worst enemy. Hang loose, hang loose Let the ocean worry 'bout bein' blue. Hang loose, hang loose. Go with the tide and I'ma take care of you. Come with me sweet darlin'. I got a seat ya ticket for the plane. We gonna fly to Waikiki, it'll just be you 'n' me. And we'll let the sun melt our cares away. Hang loose, hang loose. Let the ocean worry 'bout bein' blue. Hang loose, hang loose. Go with the tide and I'ma take care of you. Alright, we gon' be alright. Alright, you're gon' be alright! Hang Hang Hang Hang loose. loose! loose. loose.

Meaning of the song

Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it? From what Ive interpreted from the lyrics, I think the song is about relaxing and not taking things too seriously. It could also be to taking things easy and take a step back from some situations and look at them in the grand scheme of things. Ive applied this meaning to the video by relating it to a relationship and a classic guy meets girl situation. To do this further, I have chosen to use younger people because theyre more likely to be single.

How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture)

I will relate my visuals to the song by not cutting from shot to shot very quickly and taking time to do it. This will relax the viewer into the video and also into the song. I will also use establishing shots to show the whole scale of the shot and to show everything in perspective. This can relate to the meaning of the song because the song could mean to take a step back and look and things for what they are.
