A Flag Day to Remember!


Members of the Romulus Veterans of Foreign Wars presented a special Flag Day salute on June 14 at the Romulus Senior Center. The ceremony continued across the street at the Senior Towers. Senior Center Director Rose Swidan thanked everyone who attended and participated in Flag Day 2013. More photos are inside the newsletter.

Tigers Baseball
Tickets are on sale for a Romulus seniors day at the August 22 Detroit Tigers baseball game vs. the Minnesota Twins. Ticket holders will leave the Senior Center at 11 a.m. for the 1 p.m. game. Tickets are $23 for lower-level seats, with transportation included. Sign up now. Seats are limited.

Ice Cream Social


All seniors are invited to a free ice cream social starting at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, at the Romulus Senior Center. For more information, see Director Rose Swidan or call (734) 9554120.

Best wishes to all seniors representing Romulus in the 28th annual Downriver Senior Olympics. Events are July 29-August 2 in the Downriver area. Opening day includes a free breakfast at 7 a.m. at St. Andre Bessette Hall in Ecorse, the host city for this years Olympics. Bus transportation from the Romulus Senior Center will take place at 6:15 a.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 8:30, followed by a leisurely walk and various events. The deadline to register for events was June 27.

Game Days & Exercise


Members of the Romulus Senior Center can play games and exercise throughout the week: Bingo is played at noon Mondays and Wednesdays. Bunco is played at noon Tuesdays. Pinochle and other games are played during Wednesday Fun Days. Game Day is scheduled for noon Thursdays. Pokeno is played at noon Fridays. A stress-free chair exercise class begins at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays. To register, call the Senior Center at (734) 9554120. Seniors who enjoy quilting and each others company gather at 6 p.m. Thursdays.

ELECTION NEWS
The City of Romulus Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, August 6. The last day to register to vote in the election is Monday, July 8. City Clerk Ellen Craig-Bragg said new residents must fill out a new voters registration application, which is available at the City Clerks Office at City Hall, 11111 Wayne Road. Precincts and polling places have changed. Voters have been mailed updated voter registration cards. To request an absentee ballot or to receive more information about the election, please contact the Clerks Office at (734) 942-7540 or visit the city website at www.romulusgov.com/ government/clerk/aspx.

Romulus Farmers Market


The Romulus Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays through October at the Historical Park Pavilion at 11147 Hunt Street near Goddard Road in Downtown Romulus. Vendors sell such items as fresh eggs and produce, homemade baked goods and handmade crafts. There will be childrens activities, too. The first Saturday of each month will feature special events. On July 6, there will be a community picnic. August 3 is carnival day. Bridge Cards, WIC Project Fresh and Senior Project Fresh are accepted. The market accepts vendor applications. Motor City Casino


Romulus seniors will travel to the Motor City Casino on Tuesday, July 23. Buses leave the Senior Center at 9 a.m. The cost is $10 per person. The casino provides $20 in credit upon arrival. For more details, call the Senior Center at (734) 955-4120.

Flags were presented to veterans Alex McCraight (photo at left) and Jessie Charles (below). After, hot dogs, chips and ice cream were served at the center. Thank you to all participants.

Reminder: Be careful in the summer heat


The City of Romulus will open the Romulus Senior Center as a cooling center when a heat advisory is declared. A heat advisory will be issued when the heat index is expected to be at least 100 degrees for three hours or more. The National Weather Service reports that about 115 people in the U.S. die each year from extreme heat. Metro Detroit experiences about a dozen 90-plus-degree days per year. Romulus Fire Chief David Allison urges everyone especially people over age 40 to take extra precautions.

Closed for the Day


The Romulus Senior Center will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 4-5, along with Friday, July 19, which is an unpaid city furlough day.

Party Rooms for Rent


The Romulus Senior Center is a great place to celebrate birthdays, baby showers, family reunions and wedding receptions. The beautiful banquet halls and facilities at the Senior Center are available for rent at very affordable rates. There are rooms that can hold up to 120 people and they are available any day of the week. Bring your own caterer or make arrangements to use the Senior Center kitchen. Caregiver Support Group


The final scheduled Caregiver Support Group meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, at the Romulus Senior Center. Chris Goldberg, a contract social worker who has been facilitating the meetings with Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency, said funding for the program has run out for now. The monthly meetings have provided a place for caregivers to meet one another for comfort, assistance and helpful information on Alzheimers and dementia care. Group meetings could resume if funding becomes available.

Need Food?
Low-income residents are eligible for free commodities each month at the Senior Center. A variety of food is provided by The Emergency Food Assistance Program of Wayne County Senior Services. This months food distribution begins at 9:30 a.m. July 18. Romulus Senior Director Rose Swidan encourages anyone in need of food any time to contact the center at (734) 955-4120.

Tornado Season
Tornado season is upon us once again. Note that a tornado watch means conditions are right for a tornado. A tornado warning means that a tornado has been spotted and you should take cover immediately.
