ing, the Sun City Festival Community Association staff will be handing out Remember 9/11 lapel pins to our residents from September 1 through September 11 at the Member Services Desk in the Sage Recreation Center.

Finance Committee Volunteers Sought

The Board of Directors is soliciting volunteer candidates to serve on the Resident Finance Committee. The committee works closely with the Staff in reviewing the financial operations of the Community Association. This includes the monthly financial review process, the Reserve Study and reserve investment process, the Annual Audit, and the Annual Operating Budget process. The Board of Directors anticipates filling one vacancy on the Finance Committee effective November 1, 2011. Committee members can anticipate attending the Monthly Finance Committee Meeting, currently held on the second Thursday of each month in the Sage Center Conference Room. In addition, there will be situational meetings to discuss budgets, audits, and other community financial topics. Resident members in good standing who are interested in serving on the Resident Finance Committee should submit a short application letter requesting appointment to the Committee. In this letter, the individual should outline their qualifications and experience, and express why they desire to serve on the Committee. All application letters should be addressed to the Community Manager, Bruce Friedman. The deadline for application letters is September 23, 2011, so interested residents should get their letters to Bruce at their earliest convenience.

Please stop by to pick up your pin and wear it in rememberance of all those people killed in the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site and at the Pentagon, as well as those killed in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993.

RESIDENT PROFILE
Yard by yard is hard, but inch by inch is a cinch!

Nancy and Jim Akamine

Nancy and Jim Akamine met in Richmond, Virginia, one month before Jim was discharged from the Army and was about to return to Honolulu, Hawaii for college (1968). Love intervened and they married one year later. Jim received his Electrical Engineering degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia while Nancy worked on campus as secretary to the Director of Squires Student Center. They both had full careers: Jim (25 years) as an Electrical Engineer at Virginia Power Company; Nancy (30 years) in Virginia State Government Senior D Admininistrative positions to agency heads in the Dental School, Public Health Nursing, State Hazardous Quality Control, and Youth and Family Services. Vacations with family and friends at the beach, mountains, snow skiing, fishing, and travel balanced out a wonderful life. In 2000 they both retired, then Jim took a 3-year engineering consultant job in New Orleans, Lousiana with Entergy Corporations home office which covers five power companies. In 2003 they moved to Arizona, one year before Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Fully retired and at home in Del Webbs Sun City, they enjoyed rock hounding, lapidary, community theater, readers theater, clay, and pickleball with Nancy in the Sun City Marching Pom Poms. They discovered Sun City Festival in Spring 2010. Everything about it excited them! Location, people and activities are dreams come true! Clubs they are involved with include Desert Harmony, Hiking Club, Potluck, Ballroom/Line Dancing, neighborhood block parties, and they volunteer at the Festival Foothills Elementary School. Others interests include karaoke, piano, pickleball, rock hounding, travel, and family visits to Hawaii and Virginia. Regular exercise at the gym keeps them fit to maintain their energy levels. The enthusiastic Sun City Festival Staff and friendly residents make every day at Sun City Festival a motivating, inspiring and fun place to live. Married for 42 years, their retirement motto is, Yard by yard is hard, but inch by inch is a cinch!

Will this work for me? Whats the best thing by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., Fitness & Wellness Director for...?
One of the most common questions about exercise is whether or not a particular
We are constantly bombarded with advertisements and articles for Turbo Jam, P90X, Insanity, the Ab Doer, Thigh Master, etc. Yes, these work for some people in some situations, but not always. All of these things work by creating a stimulus to which the body must respond. However, they may not work to help someone reach their specific goals. Nor will they help every person get the results advertised. If a goal is as simple as weight loss, then just about anything might work. If a goal is to strengthen and stabilize back muscles, increase upper body strength, or something more specific, then particular exercises might not be effective. Or, an exercise might be downright dangerous if performed incorrectly, or when someone has certain limitations. One of the best recommendations for exercise is for it to be something you will do easily and consistently. If someone is afraid of water, swimming wont work for them because they will never do it. Likewise, if someone cant walk on a treadmill because of a back or knee injury, a treadmill wont be the right thing. Just because a neighbor or relative saw great results from something doesnt make it perfect. It could be something you hate to do, or simply cant do. When considering an exercise program, or an exercise to accomplish something very specific, many things must be taken into account. What are the goals? What are the limitations? Why is this being done? Will this exercise be something that can be easily done and fit into a schedule? Taking all of these things into account can help ensure the success of any exercise program. And remember, exercise is only part of the puzzle. Good health, fitness and weight loss are also achieved through appropriate eating habits. Again, like exercise, diet is something for which goals and limitations should be taken into account. When the right questions are asked, and all things are taken into account, exercise can help accomplish great things. exercise will accomplish something or if its the best exercise to do. Most often, the answer is that depends and the best one is the one you will do.
