A summer donation will put donors in the running for a new car.
A 2014 Chevrolet Cruze is the grand prize in the CBC Summer
Cruze-In 2014 Blood Drive. Anyone age 18 and older who registers
to donate at any CBC Donor Center or CBC mobile blood drive May

The champagne silver color of the Cruze is a toast to CBCs 50
Years of Saving Lives anniversary celebration in September.
CBC is making two exciting changes to its traditional summer
blood drive campaign. The campaign has been extended to four
months (May 30 through September 30). In addition, eligible donors
can now double their chances of winning. Eligible donors will be entered into the drawing a second time when they register for a second
donation during the blood drive period. Official rules are available at
www.givingblood.org.
The T-shirt promotion will be announced soon.
Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment at

Ohio Young Birders Club to Meet July 26 at BNC

Brukner Nature Centers Young Birders Club will meet at the Interpretive Building July 26, but take a field trip to BNCs Rivers Edge
property to visit a mock chimney established to attract chimney swifts.
These birds, often described as flying cigars, frequent towns and cities
and seem only to nest exclusively in man-made chimneys. Before migration back south to Florida and beyond, thousands of these flying
cigars may gather at a favorite roost site; volunteers will gather to
count them to the best of their ability for population estimates in the
area.
BNC staff is optimistic at locating one of these mass congregations
and will offer the opportunity for YBC members to experience the
swarm of the chimney swifts.
Young Birders Club meets from 9-11 a.m. High-quality binoculars
and field guides are provided for use during meetings and field trips,
so no additional equipment is needed.
Call 937-698-6493 if you have any questions and to RSVP.

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey

Mans Best Friend

Every morning I follow the same routine.
I get up, slowly walk downstairs, and head for the kitchen sink. To the right of me is where
I keep my daily meds. After four gulps of water, I plug in the tea kettle and prepare my
morning cup of tea. With tea in hand, I head to our sitting room to check emails and to see
if any of my children or grandchildren have put any new pictures on facebook.
Almost like clockwork, our dog Rosie jumps up on the couch and waits patiently for someone to feed her breakfast. Rosie is 10 years old this month. She has a tough time jumping
on couches, beds, and laps. In dog years, Rosie is approaching 70. I know how she feels.
The body just cant do what it used to do.
Below are things we can learn from a dog:
1. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
2. Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
3. When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
4. When its in your best interest, always practice obedience.
5. Let others know when theyve invaded your territory.
6. Take naps and always stretch before rising.
7. Run, romp, and play daily.
8. Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
9. Be loyal.
10. Never pretend to be something youre not.

Guidelines
For AdvertisinG
in our
CAlendAr oF events
There has been some confusion
regarding advertising in our Calendar of Events ($12 for the first week
and $6 for each additional week,
containing all your pertinent details),
with the guarantee of one free news
article containing more comprehensive information about your event.
A rule of thumb to remember is
that if a church, school, or organization is charging for a meal or event,
regardless of where the profits will
be directed, you must pay to advertise it in the Stillwater Valley Advertiser. The key word in the name
of our paper is advertiser. We are
able to remain in business only
through paid advertising. If we
were
to
advertise
these
dinners/events by way of free news
articles, it would be unfair to the
restaurants and organizations who do
pay for display advertising.
One exception to this guideline
would be if a charitable event is held,
with all proceeds benefitting an individual or family, such as in the
case where someone is battling an
illness or recovering from a tragic
event.
The free news articles we publish are provided as a service to our
readers, on an as space is available
basis, depending on the number of
paid advertisers we have for a given
issue. We cannot guarantee free
news articles will be published.
We hope this explanation clarifies our position. We wish we could
print each and every news article
submitted to us but, unfortunately,
the reality is that it would be financially impossible to do so.

Thank You

Wild Orphans: To Rescue or Not?

Mommy, look what I found!
Whether its a baby bird, squirrel, bunny, or other wild animal, children have a knack for finding wild orphans. Across the United States
during the spring months, thousands of wild animal babies will be picked up; some need to be rescued, some do not.
At Brukner Nature Center, we care for more than 1,000 animals each year, said Becky Crow, Curator of Wildlife. Most of the wild babies
are brought to us by well-intentioned individuals, but many of these babies did not need to be rescued, Crow added.
Baby bunnies are one of the wild animals rescued most often, but usually do not need human help. Mother rabbits are only at the nest to
feed their babies twice a day for about five minutesat dawn and dusk. And, yes, they really did put the nest in the middle of your backyard!
One reason for this is so mama rabbit can see any predators that may be approaching while she is nursing her young. Baby rabbits are in their
nest for only two to three weeks; a pretty short time before they are independent. Leave the nest alone unless you find cold, limp babies, or obviously injured ones. Brukner Nature Center has more advice for you on how to keep the young safe in the nest until they are ready to live on
their own.
There is a myth that once a baby bird is touched by a human, it will not be cared for by the parent birds. Not true! First of all, birds, except
for those in the vulture family, have poor to no sense of smell. They cant tell you touched the baby to return it to the nest. However, if you put
a cold baby bird back in the nest and its unable to beg for food when the parent arrives, it is in trouble. It is always best to call Brukner Nature
Center for advice.
Did you know that mother deer forage for food, leaving their camouflaged, spotted fawns alone for several hours at a time? People who
come across these vulnerable-looking fawns in the woods always assume they need help. Unless the fawn is obviously injuredbroken leg,
open wound, flies buzzing around itits most likely perfectly fine. Its mother intends to come back soon and expects to find the youngster
right where she left it after the last feeding.
Its illegal, as well as unwise, to keep wildlife as pets or even to try to raise orphans unless you are trained and have the proper permits
from state and federal wildlife agencies, said Crow. Licensed wildlife rehabilitators have the knowledge and experience to care for wild orphans
that need help. They know how to raise orphans to be healthy and wild. When you find a wild animal you think needs help, its best to call for
advice so both you and the wild animal remain safe.
In this area, you can call Brukner Nature Center at 937-698-6493. Please make certain the wild animal in question needs to be rescued.
Even with the best efforts of Brukner Nature Center, there is no substitute for Mother Nature.
Brukner Nature Center is a non-profit, privately-funded organization promoting the appreciation and understanding of wildlife conservation
through preservation, education, and rehabilitation. Hours of operation are Monday thru Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sundays, 12:30-5
p.m. Admission is $2.50 per person or $10 for a family of four or more (cash or check). BNC members are always free. No admission charge
on Sundays! Membership dues provide valuable operational support to subsidize environmental and wildlife rehabilitation. The benefits of
membership are many, so please consider joining today!
For more information or to make a donation, call 937-698-6493, email info@bruknernaturecenter.com, or visit our website at www.bruknernaturecenter.com.

Reader Advisory: The National Trade

Association we belong to has purchased the above classifieds. Determining the value of their service or
product is advised by this publication. In
order to avoid misunderstandings,
some advertisers do not offer employment but rather supply the readers with
manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other
businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in
advance or give the client your checking, license ID, or credit card numbers.
Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and
note that if a credit repair company
does business only over the phone it is
illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based
in US dollars. Toll free numbers may or
may not reach Canada.
