There is nothing ambiguous about the latest Connecticut employment report, released Thursday by the state Department of Labor. No matter what lens you use, the states employment picture in August just doesnt look good. Connecticut lost 6,800 nonfarm jobs last month, the labor

department said, while its unemployment rate jumped from 8.5 percent in July to 9 percent, the highest monthly increase in the jobless rate since 1976, or in 36 years. The last time the states monthly unemployment rate reached 9 percent was in April 2011. The rate has risen 0.9 percentage points in two months. The labor department Thursday also revised its estimate of

5,100 jobs created in July downward, and now says only 3,500 were created during the month. August was the fourth month this year in which the state lost jobs. Over the first eight months of 2012, Connecticut has produced a net gain of just 1,300 jobs, 6,700 fewer than the 8,000 produced through August of 2011. See JOBS, Page 9A

he letters, written in pencil in the uncertain half-cursive of a 25-year-old soldier, sat on a bookshelf in a New Britain home for 59 years. After Nicholas DeSimone Jr. was declared missing following a July 13, 1953, battle in the Korean War, someone tucked the two dozen letters he wrote to

his family in a safe spot. Later, the letters would be joined by posthumously awarded medals and updates from the military on recovery efforts for the remains of those presumed killed in action. Lana Grodnik of Waterbury, DeSimones niece, stumbled upon the letters while cleaning

the home where Nicky grew up and where her parents now live. Outside, next to the American flag, waves a black POW/MIA flag. That flag will be flown throughout the country today, as the third Friday in September marks National POW/MIA Recognition Day, meant to remember those who were prisoners of war or missing in action, and their families. HARTFORD China may be an unusual destination for the governor of Connecticut, but Dannel P. Malloy says his recent 10-day visit to that country and dozens of other trips abroad and in the U.S. could lead to valuable business deals for the state. The Asia trip wrapped up earlier this week and came on the heels of Malloys appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. It was the most ambitious excursion yet for

the first-term Democrat, who maintains his travels around the world and regularly to Washington are aimed at boosting Connecticuts clout and economic development. But critics wonder whether he is trying to raise his profile for a possible bid for higher office, speculation Malloy steadfastly denies. Since taking office in 2010, Malloy has made at least 30 trips, travel records obtained by The Associated Press show. His office has spent nearly $16,500 on some of See TRIPS, Page 7A
