MONTAGE
Discription:
A photo montage created with Adobe Photoshop with a theme of bravery.

Programs/Tools Used:
Adobe Photoshop

Date Completed:
May 31, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography.

Process:
I first used a paint bucket to make the background black. I took the photo of the three guys and sized it down so it would fit better. I then added a mask to the photo, and using a brush I painted over the edges of the photo to remove its hard edges. Then using a brush, which was at 33% opacity, I painted around the guys in the photo to gradually blend them into the background. I repeated this exact process with the photo of Dwayne The Rock Johnson and moved the picture into the opposite corner. With the text for the theme (Bravery) I made bigger and bolder to contrast the quote. I made the text of the quote larger than the text for who said the quote. Lastly I added a plastic wrap filter to create a glow to the poster.

IMAGING
Discription:
This is a photo I took myself and then edited in Adobe Photoshop.

Programs/Tools used:
Adobe Photoshop, Casio Exilim Camera

Date Completed:
May 23, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Learn how to take good digital photographs and edit them in photoshop. Edit the image using, cropping, filters, color adjustments and more.

Process:
First I took many different pictures of the M&Ms in different places. I took the one I liked and brought it into Photoshop where I cropped it to a 66 image. After that I used the selection tool to select the background of my image. I then desaturated the background and added a watercolor filter. I then colorized the background giving it a light purple to make the M&Ms stick out more.

BROCHURE
Discription:
A fictional brochure for a vacation to the Death Star from Star Wars.

Programs/Tools used:
Adobe InDesgin and Adobe illustrator

Date Completed:
July 13, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images.

Process:
I first created the logo in illustrator. I started by making a quick Death Star looking graphic using the ellipse and pen tool. With the pen tool again I created a lawn chair with a umbrella next to it. I then scaled down the chair and umbrella so they could be placed on top of the Death Star. Last I found and downloaded the font Star Jedi to be used as the text for the logo. After designing the logo I moved in into InDesign. After splitting the two document pages in half I placed the logo on the panel that would become the front of the brochure. The rest of the pictures I found online were placed inside and on the back of the brochure. I then found a picture of stars to use as the background for the brochure to fit with the Death Star is in space.

WEB PAGE
Discription:
A web page dedicated to the process of how I made one of the logos I used in a previous project.

Programs/Tools used:
Photoshop, Notepad++ and Font Squirrel

Date Completed:
June 29, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:
I have never worked with HTML or CSS before so this was a fun project for me. I worked with the program Notepad++ to create the HTML coding and alter the CSS document we were provided. With the HTML, I placed my title, logo, and information about how I created the logo. With the CSS document, I wanted to make the webpage look similar to my logo. To do this I matched the colors and text to the logo. One of the fonts I used (Basic Title Font) is one that I had downloaded myself. Since no one else would really have it I had to embed the text into the CSS document so other people could see the page with the original text.

LOGOS
Discription:
Three different logos that were created for the same company.

Programs/Tools used:
Adobe illustrator

Date Completed:
June 8, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image and use the basic tools of Illustrator to design them.

Process:
This project was fun as I have used illustrator before. For the first logo, I copied the text for sundial and moved it so it would give the text above it a shadow effect. Then with the gradient tool I made the shadow text as if I was getting lighter as it moved across. With the second logo I used pretty basic text and, to stick with the sun part of the company name I made a sun and placed it behind the a in sundial. The third logo was probably the most challenging but the most fun. I combined a circle and a triangle to make the sundial object with the use of negative space as well. Then to finish it off I added a shadow to the sundial.

BUSINESS CARD
Discription:
A business card and letterhead created for a fictional company.

Programs/Tools used:
Adobe illustrator and Adobe InDesign

Date Completed:
June 14, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign.

Process:
For this project I used a new variation to a logo I created, in Adobe illustrator, for a previous project. I changed the coloring and the position of the text. I also changed the styles of text used. Using this logo I created the business card by using the rectangle tool so I knew the amount of space I had to work with. I then placed the logo inside the rectangle and also added the contact information.

LETTERHEAD
Discription:
A business card and letterhead created for a fictional company.

Programs/Tools used:
Adobe illustrator and Adobe InDesign

FLIER
Discription:
A flier I made for Vouant Communications leadership conference.

Programs/Tools used:
Adobe InDesign

Date Completed:
May 9, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep the links intact.

Process:
This was my first time ever using InDesign, but quickly learned how to use the basic tools that I would need. Once I sketched out a few ideas, I choose the one I felt was most effective and recreated it in InDesign. I wanted to bring attention to the purpose of the conference, so I placed it between to black boxes creating contrast. I chose to use this picture because I felt it creates flow, your eyes move from the picture and to the body copy. Using the rulers and guidelines I was able to create alignment with my text.

EVENT AD
Discription:
The event ad is for a taco truck that is having a discount sale to raise money.

Programs/Tools used:
Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, Adobe Reader

Date Completed:
May 17, 2013

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130, Eric Lybbert

Objectives:
Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Use text boxes for layout in Word. Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:
I first scanned the image onto the computer and brought it into Word. Once in Word I removed the background from the image. I then created the green squares on the top, bottom, and along the side of the ad to create a flow. To keep the text from being cluttered, I put the different text in the different boxes keeping the flow. I made the title bold and big to bring attention to it.
