SincethefirstconferenceinMay2003,significantresearchand policyaccomplishmentshaveaddressed theimpactsofmanagementonhydrologyandwaterqualityinagriculturalwatersheds.Theoverallgoal ofthisconferenceistoprovideaforumforresearchers,policy makers,andpractitionersfromthe aroundtheworldtodiscussthelatestadvancementsinagriculturalhydrologyandwaterquality. CONFERENCEEXPECTATIONS Agriculturalhydrologyandwaterqualityisafieldspanningawidearrayofdisciplinesrangingfromsoil science,agronomy,hydrology,andengineering,tobiology,chemistry,ecology,sociology,geography, andeconomics..Overthepastdecade,anumberofnewchallenges havearisenthatrequirea multidisciplinaryresearchapproach.Theseinclude,butarenotlimitedto:determininghowclimate changewillaffectfoodproductionandwaterresources;addressingregionalandglobalnutrient imbalancesandthelegacycontaminantsthatresultfromtheseimbalances;improvingourabilityto measure,detect,andmitigateemergingcontaminants;quantifying theroleofagriculturaldrainageon thetiminganddeliveryofagriculturalpollutantstostreamsandrivers;monitoringandmodelingthe effectivenessofbestmanagementpracticesatfield,farm,andwatershedscales;andevaluatingthe costsandbenefitsoftransitioningagriculturallandsfromfood productiontobioenergy production. Clearly,itistimeforaconferencethatfocusesoncurrent,as wellasemergingchallengesand opportunitiesinagriculturalhydrologyandwaterqualityresearchandmanagement. TheConferencePlanningCommitteeisdevelopingaprogramthatwill: Beaforumonarangeofimportanttopicsincluding:biofuels andbioenergy crops;climatechange impactsonagriculture;theFarmBill;irrigationanddrainagemanagement;erosionandsediment control;manureandfertilizermanagement;covercropsandvegetatedbuffers;emergingagricultural contaminants;groundwatermanagementandquality;totalmaximumdailyloadsinwatersheds;and hydrologicandwatershedsimulationmodeling. Providenetworkingopportunitiesthatstimulatediscussionregardingthetechnical, economic,andcommunityaspectsofagriculturalhydrologyandwaterquality. Createanawarenessoftheneedforsoundscienceandpoliciestobalancetheneedfor agriculturalproductionwiththedesiretoprotectwaterquality.
