Reaching Family Togetherness in the Community Seminar The Winston Salem Primera Iglesia del Nazareno is on a mission to reduce the effects of social determinants on health in the Hispanic community. A seminar will be held at Winston Salem Primera on August 3, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. to provide Hispanic residents with information on how to participate in the free family enrichment program called Reaching Family Togetherness in the Community. With a generous donation from Walmart, Families who attend the seminar will automatically be placed in a drawing for 5 $100 gift cards. Reaching Family Togetherness in the Community, founded by Primera Iglesia del Nazareno, is a yearlong program for Hispanic families interested in improving family situations, changing risky behaviors, and improving the health of their family. In Forsyth County, about 12% of the population is of Hispanic origin and 38.5% are in poverty.1 Hispanics , therefore, may be considered one of the most vulnerable populations when compared to the countys poverty rate of 18.9% .1 Access to health care is also an issue for Hispanics in Forsyth county. More than 50% of Hispanics are uninsured as compared to the countys uninsured population of 16.8%.1 In addition, violence has become a public health concern since homicide and suicide rates were in the top 15 causes of death among specific minority groups.1 Rosa Maria Gonzales-Guarda, an expert for eliminating Hispanic health disparities, said a series of social, environmental, and systematic disparities, such as education, poverty, discrimination, access to health care, and biases in our health care delivery system, affect Hispanics and other racial and ethnic minority groups in the United States.2 Dr. Paula Braveman, another expert on social determinants of health in relevance to cancer disparities, noted that there are large disparities by race and incomebut when we look at life expectancy at age 25 by income, you see this very dramatic stepwise incremental radiant, that as the income goes up, so does the life expectancy at age 25, she added that it would not be surprising almost to anyone to see a big difference in life expectancy between those who are at the very bottom and those who are at the top.3 In order to eliminate health disparities among Hispanics, community empowerment and community partnership is necessary. This is just what Winston Salem Primera is offering to the community through their program Reaching Family Togetherness in the Community. -moreWinston Salem Primera Iglesia del Nazareno 530 Barnes Road.
