"New Wine"
"Then John's disciples came and asked him, 'How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?' "Jesus answered, 'How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast. No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.'" Matthew 9:`1417. Generally today when we buy wine it comes in a glass or a bottle, having already been fermented at the vineyard. In Jesus' day new wine was put into a goatskin sewn together to be water tight. As the wine fermented it expanded, and the goatskin with it. If new wine was then added to the already-expanded goatskin (which was now old) it would burst. This is a very fitting allegory for Jesus to use when addressing how John's disciples and the Pharisees continued to cling to legalism. John's disciples fasted as they mourned for their sins and prepared for the coming of the Messiah. Jesus' disciples didn't need to fast because Jesus is the Messiah and is already among them. The Messiah, God with us, Jesus, came to teach us to move away from living under the obligation of "Law". God with us means the law is fulfilled. Jesus came to show us how to love one another and to see his face in every person on the planet, to move beyond "us vs. them" to unity in spirit, even within the vast diversity of the planet. We worship differently, our understanding of God varies according to our experience of and relationship with God through the love and imitation of Jesus Christ.

We are called to be a New Creation in Christ. The creation stories in Genesis begin with a void, a darkness, and then the hovering of the Holy Spirit, the Breath of Life which breathed life into the world through flowing water and imagination and material substance. The created world within the Holy Love of Guidance within a universe of mystery. Then the Gospels show us once again the New Creation in Christ, as Mary comes to the tomb still enveloped in the darkness of night and the Spirit of the Lord is with her and around her as she discovers the tomb empty and the Lord appearing like a gardener, perhaps tending new shoots. John the Baptist helped people to "die with Christ" in repentance, by going under the water poured by loving hands, or submerging under the waters of the Jordan and emerging in the newness of imagination, letting go of the old wineskin and being poured into the new creation. The new wineskins continue to expand as our imaginations continue to invite in the fresh breath of God's living Holy Spirit and we allow ourselves to grow. Breathe deeply of the Spirits fragrance. God is still speaking! In love and joy, Pastor Kristin

The Lamplighter Minister of Strategic Innovation

Introduction: The Missouri Mid-South Conference of the UCC has determined that it will move from two Associate Conference Ministers to one ACM as of July 1, 2014 due to financial constraints. This position has been created in order to make that transition as healthy and successful as possible for the churches, members and authorized ministers of the Conference. General Statement of Responsibilities: The Minister of Strategic Innovation is responsible to assess the opportunities and challenges before the Missouri Mid-South Conference as it reconfigures its life with new models of Conference ministry. This minister will develop initiatives to increase the capacity of the authorized ministers, churches, laity and associations to assume a variety of responsibilities for our common life. The incumbent will also prepare systems and procedures within the Conference's program and administrative life to ensure as healthy a transition as possible. The Minister will oversee communications to build up relationships and to ensure transparency throughout the life of the Conference. All work is done in coordination with the Visioning process and under the oversight of the Conference Minister and in collaboration with other staff. Accountability: The Minister of Strategic Innovation is selected by the Conference Minister, confirmed by the Conference Council and accountable to the Conference Minister. It bears saying, I think, that the staff of your Conference have been under high stress since late May, and that stress will continue for some time to come. None of them has complained about that, but as your Acting Conference Minister, I ask for your understanding as we move into a period in which significant staff changes will occur with Marc Wessels' move to South Dakota and soon the arrival of the new Minister for Strategic Innovation. With declining financial support, we are going to be unable to respond with as much timeliness as we would like to the needs of our churches and will need others among you to step forward from time to time to help. Your ideas and your assistance will be greatly appreciated! Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree Acting Conference Minister

Additional Staff Changes at Your Conference - New Position Available!

In the wake of Julie Simmons' resignation as Communications Specialist, we took a new look at the staffing of the administrative and communications functions in the office. After reviewing Renee Cordes' resume and talking with her, I discovered that she has years of experience in communications and marketing! So the Executive Committee has approved, and I have implemented, a shift in job responsibilities. Renee will now be Administrative Coordinator, including communications, and we will soon hire an Office Services Clerk for 18 hours a week to provide essential secretarial and other services to Renee and your staff.

The Lamplighter
started sometime in elementary school. I cant remember whether I was in fourth or fifth grade. I do remember that it all started with a pig week at school, sponsored by our media center. There were events throughout the week around pigs in literature. Somewhere along the line, I decided that I liked pigs because they were adorable, unique, intelligent, and incredibly misunderstood. Anyway, as the years went on, I acquired all kinds of pig-related items. Most of them came as gifts from friends and family. I had posters, calendars, figurines, books, a game, notepads, tote bagsyou name it. The collection seemed to peak during college. After I got married and moved out of my parents house, I brought most of the collection with me. Over time, distracted by new endeavors and realizing the limits of space in our home, the obsession waned a bit. I still have a few people close to me who look for unique pig items and send them my way. There is a corner of our guest room dedicated to the pig collection along with a few assorted kitchen magnets that grace the refrigerator. Two years after Charlottes death, I think its safe to say that the pig collection is being replaced by butterflies. Ever since that day at Disney when Roger had his epiphany and shared the butterfly analogy with Charlotte, the concept of metamorphosis has been a part of our lives. I see butterflies everywhere. Others see them too. They share butterfly stories with us. We have received some beautiful butterfly gifts over the last two years ranging from stained glass creations and garden statues to necklaces and decorative plaques. I rarely leave my house without wearing a butterfly of some kind each day. Butterflies are not only beautiful; they spread beauty throughout the world as they transfer pollen from flower to flower. Their lives are short but they make the most of their time, sometimes traveling thousands of miles in their migration from place to place. When you encounter a butterfly, you cannot help but smile. That was Charlotte. I think of her every day and I miss her. I am grateful that her legacy lives on in the work we do with our foundation. While grief is not easy, helping others eases the burden a little bit. I have been given the opportunity to give to others while sharing her spirit. In doing so, I remember the most unique butterfly to ever touch my heart. I will remember heruntil pigs fly.

Thanks so much to Parish Life Committee for a delicious and fun Ice Cream Social!
