Health Advocates in Bali Opposed to World Tobacco Asia Conference Set for Bali September 2425, 2014 The Jakarta Post reports that an anti-smoking group The Bali Tobacco Control Initiative is urging the government to cancel the World Tobacco Asia (WTA) conference planned in Bali in 2014.
The anti-smoking Initiative is comprised of members from Bali's Udayana University's Public Health Department. Coordinator of the Bali Tobacco Control Initiative, Made Kerta Duana, said: The conference in Bali is against our commitment to encourage people to live healthily without cigarettes. The law, enacted in 2011, bans smoking in hotel, restaurants, tourist attractions, schools, shopping centers, government offices and other public areas. Restrictions are also place on the advertising and promotion of tobacco products, which may place the coming conference in direct conflict with the law Those found to be breaking the anti-smoking rules could be subject to fines and imprisonment. A scientist has stitched together NASA satellite images to create an effect that makes the Earth look as if it is breathing.
US programmer John Nelson has given the the iconic 'blue marble' view of the Earth a dramatic new twist. M r N e l s o n , a programmer for IDV Solutions, combined the images provided by Nasa as part of its 'Blue Marble Next Generation' project, which took a picture of the Earth each month. "I didn't expect to be so mesmerised by them," Mr Nelson said. The composite of four months of satellite observations with a spatial resolution of 1sq km per pixel. Mr Nelson said the idea for the site came following a chat with a colleague about design options

"I was curious if stitching them together in time into an animation would show and interesting seasonal pattern and so I went to work. "I downloaded the twelve cloudfree satellite imagery mosaics of Earth at each month of the year. I wrapped them into some fun projections then stitched them together into a couple animated gifs. "Because much of the dramatic change throughout the year occurs in the northern latitudes, I chose a polar projection to focus on this area. "Overall, to me it looks like breathing. "When I stitch together what can be an impersonal snapshot of an entire planet, all of the sudden I see a thing with a heartbeat."
Lebaran
At the end of the month of Ramadhan and its special religious observance is the Eid holiday, called Idul Fitri or Lebaran in Indonesia on 8th August 2013. In Indonesia, this is the time when Muslims visit their family and friends to ask for forgiveness for any wrongs they have committed in the previous year. They express this wish in the phrase Mohon Maaf Lahir Batin which means "forgive me from the bottom of my heart/soul for my wrongdoings in the past year". A traditional Arabic (Muslim) greeting for the Eid celebrations is also commonly used in Indonesia "Minal Aidin Wal Fa Idzin", which is expressed upon meeting friends and family during the festive days. Traditional foods are consumed, family and friends gather to ask forgiveness and exchange greetings, new clothing is worn, children receive gifts of money and visits are made to recreational parks -- all to celebrate the successful completion of the fasting month. On Java, prior to the start of the fasting month (but not during it), visits are made to the graves of family ancestors (nyekar) to pay respects, clean the grave and leave flowers, causing major traffic jams near all major cemeteries. Idul Fitri begins with mass prayer gatherings early in the morning at mosques, open fields, parks and on major streets. It is an amazing sight to see rows of hundreds of Muslim women all dressed in their mukena (white, head-to-toe prayer gowns) performing the synchronized prayer ritual. Muslim men tend to wear sarong, traditional shirts and peci hats to Idul Fitri morning prayers. On the walk home from the mass prayers, quick visits are made to friends in the neighborhood to ask for forgiveness. Following the morning prayers and neighborhood visits, visits are made to close family members around town. Family members go to their parents first and then to the most senior relative's house (oldest person in the family) to Mohon Maaf ... with family members. Then depending on your age/status in the family, you visit aunts and uncles homes to do the same. At each house drinks and cookies or snacks are served, and since it is very impolite to refuse the food, by the end of the day you are so full you can hardly move. These customs may entail several days of visiting relatives and often there will be a gathering of family members at the senior-most relative's house. Employees may also visit the homes of their senior bosses in the company or critical business colleagues and government officials to "Mohon Maaf ... " after their family visits are completed. In Jakarta, these customs entail days and days of visiting relatives and colleagues resulting in a great time of family reunions and upset to normal working/living schedules. Many people also take the opportunity of the Lebaran holiday to visit recreational parks. While gathering with family, it is customary for the adults to give the young children some money ... they may meet you at the door shaking their wallets! It is also customary to distribute money to children in the poor neighborhoods around your home, Rp 1,000 (or more) per child will bring huge smiles to their faces! In Jakarta neighborhoods there may also be organized fun and games sponsored by local businesses ... including climbing a greased pole to try to get to the prizes on the top called panjat pinang. A fun site to see! Strongly held traditions to visit family at this time necessitate the exodus of and estimated 7.13 million (2011 estimated figures) people from Jakarta alone, as well as additional millions from other urban centers, to rural villages and hometowns for the Lebaran holiday. The logistics of this exodus causes enormous headaches for the government each year. During this period the streets in Jakarta are nearly empty as the population decreases dramatically. The hardships and inconveniences endured by the travelers in overcrowded buses, trains and cars is unbelievable, yet they feel that this is a small price to pay to spend the holidays with their family and friends. Traditionally these urban dwellers come bearing gifts or money earned during the previous year for their family. There are two peaks to this exodus which cause major logistical nightmares ... the departure back to the home village/town ... and then the return to the town of residence. They often return from the exodus accompanied by relatives and friends looking for work in the cities, furthering the pressures of urbanization. The government attempts to prevent the socially undesirable such as beggars, vagrants and others from migrating to the cites, but the task is overwhelming. During the weeks after Lebaran many groups hold halal bilhalal gatherings where employees from a company, friends, colleagues or members of an organization gather to share a meal and ask each other's forgiveness. Non-Muslims are often invited to participate in these festive gatherings also.

Pakistani television is screening what many call its most controversial content yet in a ruthless quest for ratings, a talk-show host who gives away babies live on air.
AamirLiaquatHussain, a bespectacled 41-year-old with a neatly trimmed beard, gave away two abandoned infant girls to childless families last month and plans to give away a baby boy this week. "If we didn't find this baby, a cat or a dog would have eaten it," Hussain proclaimed during one broadcast, before presenting a tiny girl wrapped in pink and red to her new parents. The audience erupted with applause. Hussain is one of Pakistan's most popular talkshow hosts. During his m a r a t h o n b r o a d c a s ts h e cooks, interviews clerics and celebrities, entertains children and hosts game shows. He usually gives prizes like motorbikes, mobile phones and land deeds to audience members who answer questions about Islam. But at the beginning of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, when television stations battle fiercely for ratings, Hussain astonished Pakistan when he presented two families with babies. "We were told that we had passed all the interviews and had been selected to adopt a baby," said RiazUddin, 40, an engineer. "We got our baby on live TV." The abandoned babies were

was the poverty forcing families to abandon children. Hussain's show is one of many such broadcasts. The Pakistani media has flourished over the past decade or so following the liberalization of the industry, particularly broadcasting, after decades of tight state control. Now, instead of battling state restrictions, presenters fight for audiences and advertising by seeing who is most outrageous. Recent episodes include a female anchor stalking couples in a park to challenge their morality, and a news program which once ran a live broadcast showing a staff member bleeding to death in an operating theatre after he was shot in a riot. Even among t h i s c o m p a n y, Hussain stands out. In 2008, he hosted scholars who called for the deaths of A h m a d i s , a persecuted religious sect in Pakistan. Within a day, two prominent Ahmadis had been shot dead. The year before, he had to resign from his post as junior minister for religious affairs after denouncing author Salman Rushdie for blasphemy, a crime punished by death in Pakistan. Since then, his university degree has been exposed as a fake and a video showing him making crude jokes with clerics between takes of his show has leaked onto YouTube. There is nothing they won't do to get viewers," said comedian Sami Shah. "If I was a cynic, I'd say this can only end badly. But since I'm a realist, I'll say it's already ended terribly."

Ask Martha
Dear Martha, My wife, with whom I have a very loving relationship, is taken to doing something which I consider is a bit 'not nice', and having discussed it with her, am a little confused! Literally almost every time we are at a social setting, an airport lounge or the like, she makes a point of staring at 'cute men', catching their eye and gazing at them for long periods, seemingly completely oblivious to me being there. She is a very pretty lady, and it does not take much for her to attract 'the eye', and this has happened on a number of occasions over a long period of time. I literally had enough the other night, and asked her about it, to which she said 'it is acceptable (for her to do this) from her perspective', and got quite angry that I had 'called her on it'. To me this is a quite disrespectful thing to do to a partner, and then I started to wonder what would happen when I was not about. To which I was told 'oh you don't trust me'. Am I being 'precious' being concerned about this, and is it acceptable for a wife or husband to do that sort of thing? Neil Dear Neil, I don't' think you're being precious but I don't think your wife catching men's eyes is the end of the world. What matters is she doesn't seem to think it's a problem and you do. When you're married or in a relationship it's crazy to think your partner will never again find another member of the opposite sex attractive. It's also crazy to think they will never again enjoy the attentions of anyone else but you. But it's also not too much to ask that the person you're supposed to love most concede some ground in the way they behave if it makes you feel uncomfortable. And it's also important you have some boundaries. Check out a good looking guy while your husband is checking our duty free, sure. But spend five minutes playing eyeball ping pong while your husband is sitting beside you watching it go on and you're pushing the friendship. Is it ok to bait and hook a look from a man just to get an ego boost? Sure it is. Most things are ok once and a while. Nothing is ok when it's a prop or a drug or it hurts the person you love. I think you probably need to talk to her again without the animosity and say this is something that makes you unhappy in the relationship. You need to tell her how it makes you feel. You need to say it is not about her never being able to look at other men, but when she does it constantly, when she is always staring out from the relationship rather than in, it leaves you feeling neglected and unsure. Just because you're a man doesn't mean you have to man up and just put up with things that hurt your feelings. Explain to her that it's not that you don't trust her. It's not even that you feel jealous that she's about to run off with one of these men. It's that it makes you feel less valued - and surely she must understand that. Your wife is chasing that thrill and that's ok, now and then. But for the most part marriages thrive when people put their attention into each other rather than on people outside them. Martha

Cher, born CherilynSarkisian, May 20, 1946) is an American singer and actress. Recognized for having brought the sense of female autonomy and self-actualization into the entertainment industry, she is known for her distinctive contralto singing voice and for having worked in various areas of entertainment, as well as for continuously reinventing both her music and image which has led to her being called the Goddess of Pop. Cher became prominent in 1965 as one-half of the folk rock husbandwife duo Sonny & Cher, who popularized a particular smooth sound that successfully competed with the dominant British Invasion and Motown sounds of the era. From 1965, she had established herself as a successful solo artist with million-selling singles such as "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)", "Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves", "Half-Breed", and "Dark Lady", songs that deal with subjects rarely addressed in American popular music. Goldmine magazine's PhillMarder described her as the leader of an effort in the 1960s to "advance feminine rebellion in the rock world and the prototype of the female rock star, setting the standard for appearance and attitude". After the duo's drug-free lifestyle had lost its popular appeal in the United States owing to the drug culture of the 1960s, she returned to stardom in the 1970s as a television personality with her shows The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and Cher, both of which attained immense popularity. She became a fashion trendsetter with her daring outfits. After Cher and Sonny divorced in 1975, Cher experimented with various musical styles, including disco and new wave, before becoming a top-earning live act in Las Vegas. In the early 1980s, Cher made her Broadway debut and starred in the film Silkwood, which earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1983. In the following years, she starred in films such as Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, and Moonstruck, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1988. At the same time, she established herself as a "serious rock and roller" by releasing platinum albums such as Heart of Stone (1989) and successful singles such as "I Found Someone" and "If I Could Turn Back Time". Four unanswered goals in the final eight minutes, including two in the final 90 seconds, saw Port Adelaide steal Showdown bragging rights from the Crows with a four-point win on Sunday evening.
At Football Park, a lucky bounce turned the tide the Power as they hit four goals without response in the dying stages of the derby clash with Adelaide. With eight minutes remaining, Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard kicked majors to draw Port within eight points of the Crows. Angus Monfries then broke forward and his punt looked destined for a behind, but a sharp bounce off the turf saw the ball deflect in for a goal to put Port just two points behind with a minute to play. If being a mile above sea level is not high enough for visitors to Denver, guests at one hotel can pay a cool $50,000 to get an additional 22-foot (7-meter) boost in an inflatable room hoisted into the downtown skyline. Perched atop a mechanical scissor lift affixed to the roof of a van parked outside the Curtis Hotel in downtown Denver, "the world's only floating pop-up hotel" is a small but fully functional guest room, according to hotel promotional material. The 5-foot-by-7-foot (1.5-meter-by-2.1-meter) inflatable chamber about the dimensions of an elevator is the brainchild of New York-based artist Alex Schweder, who created the work for a local festival to promote the arts. Patrons can also host a disco party at the main hotel's '70s-style lounge. And guests who buy the package will be greeted at their hotel room by S o n n y a n d C h e r impersonators. Although the quirky concept is creating a buzz in downtown Denver, so far no one has reserved the room, which will be available for another few weeks, Thompson said. The visitors then stretched their lead on the stroke of half-time when Justin Horo, who was released by the Eels last year with a year left on his contract - fought his way to the line for his fifth try in the last four matches. Manly tightened their control after the re-start and the impressive Daly Cherry-Evans danced his way to the line to end the game as a contest before Brett Stewart and Williams crossed. The North Queensland Cowboys put one of the most tumultuous weeks in the club's history behind them, thrashing premiership contenders South Sydney 30-12 in Townsville.
Following the death of former coach Graham Murray and the board's termination of coach Neil Henry's contract for 2014, North Queensland responded in the best possible way defeating the Rabbitohs for the first time since 2009 and keeping their slim finals hopes alive. They stay in 13th but denied Souths their chance to return to the top of the ladder. In Townsville, the Cowboys made the perfect start, debutant winger Kyle Feldt setting up a try with his second touch of the ball, laying inside in the fifth minute for Brent Tate. After an arm wrestle for the rest of the half, South Sydney had Jeff Lima put on report for late contact on Johnathan Thurston. Captain John Sutton was helped from the field with an ankle sprain that may keep him out for several weeks as Tariq Sims extended the Cowboys lead to 12 on 39 minutes. The Cowboys continued their momentum after the break and were unlucky not to be a further two tries ahead within five minutes after the video referee twice overturned the on-field officials. In the most controversial of the decisions, video referee Chris Ward judged Kane Linnett knocked the ball on as he

made his way to the tryline, although the replays were unclear. Just two minutes later, Ward said Gavin Cooper obstructed Ben Te'o from getting near Thurston after he dummied past Reynolds and Nathan Merritt. But Linnett eventually did find the tryline on 55 minutes, the ball going through the hands of half-back Robert Lui, Thurston and Matt Bowen before the centre barged his way over the line. He was integral in the next try seven minutes later making a big line break which set up Lui for a try before Linnett made a 90 metre run to grab his second and push the lead out to 30 with 11 minutes still to play. The Rabbitohs finally breached the Cowboys persistent defence twice in the final five minutes, with tries to Bryson Goodwin and George Burgess. Debutant Feldt made his presence felt, setting up a try, making 128 metres from 9 runs and producing a stunning leaping try-saving tackle to deny a certain Rabbitohs' try in the 50th minute.

It took 19 rounds but Greater Western Sydney racked up its first victory of the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon with a six-goal defeat of equally struggling Melbourne.
The Demons kept it close for much of the match despite being outkicked in the second and final terms but conceding five goals in the last quarter condemned them to a 19.10 (124) to 12.15 (87) loss. Giants forward Jeremy Cameron and Callan Ward each kicked four goals up front for the home side while Devon Smith bagged a hat-trick. four points of the Demons, who sit 17th with just one more win. The Giants won two games in their inaugural season in the AFL, over Gold Coast and Port Adelaide. GWS defender Phil Davis said victory was made all the more sweet for his team given the pressure the Giants have been under to win. "I thought every time we got challenged, there was a true response from all the boys out there," he told Grandstand. "The 21 out there did a great job and I'm very proud. The amount of pressure [we faced] externally, we did a great job just keeping up the process ... but the sense of relief is enormous."
