WRITING PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION (WPA) WORK

Positions Held Writing Program Research Assistant. (August 2011 August 2013) I worked closely with the Writing Program Director and Assistant Director to implement research projects that included a range of data collection practices (i.e., interviews, observations, focus groups, surveys) that assessed the professionalization of the University of Arizona Writing Program. My work focused on a longitudinal study of student writing that will assess the transfer and metacognitive abilities of students from their experience in first-year composition all the way through

their first year in the workplace. I was involved in creating the writing prompts for students, implementing the study, informing instructors of their role, writing grants, creating rubrics for and assessing students essays, and collecting/organizing data. Writing Program Advisory Council Representative. (January 2011 January 2012) I served as the English Graduate Unions representative to the University of Arizonas Writing Program Advisory Council, bringing the unions concerns to the meetings and reporting back to the union about important changes to writing program policies. Curriculum Development Developmental Writing Course Pilot. (August 2012 December 2012) I worked with seven instructors at Pima Community College to implement a grant-supported Developmental Writing course. Pima has a two-semester sequence for first-year writing, and this course was designed to move students who assessed below the requirements for the first-semester sequence successfully into the second semester of the sequence. We instituted an additional studio component so students receive more one-on-one time with instructors, and we instructors met once a week to design common assignments, participate in grade norming, and shape the course. Graduate Teacher Training Curriculum Redesign . (September 2011 May 2012) I worked with three other University of Arizona teaching assistants to research the University of Arizonas teacher training program (preceptorship) by conducting surveys of students who have gone through the program and by researching other universities graduate teacher training programs. We were invited to speak to the faculty supervisors who teach preceptorship, and many of the suggested changes are in the process of being implemented into the revised curriculum. WIRE Redesign. (August 2012) My English 101 curriculum is featured on our course materials page, WIRE, for future instructors to model/adapt. Event Coordination University of Arizonas National Day on Writing Event. (October 2012) With my fellow research assistant, I organized the University of Arizonas first inaugural celebration of the NCTEs National Day on Writing. We had over 650 students and 15 instructors participate. I secured funding for the event, created and organized all activities (which included a Digital Literacy Narratives Booth, Rsum Workshopping Booth, and Stylistics for Snacks activities), coordinated meetings for volunteers, and ran the event. Why We Write Collaborative Event. (Fall 2011) Myself and two colleagues organized a collaborative event, titled the Why We Write event. We had all five of our English 101 courses (125 students) work collaboratively through online peer review throughout the semester. They also worked to assess and evaluate the best compositions from each course at the end of the semester. The final event, for which we secured grant funding, consisted of an awards ceremony and reading of the best compositions. Awards were given for most helpful peer reviewers. This event gave students a goal to work towards and also helped them show appreciation for their peers.
