Reading: Who wants to be a millionaire? I do!

The audience became silent. Contestant Charles Ingram was about to answer the million-pound question on the TV quiz show Who Wants To Be a Milionaire? 'A number 1 followed by 100 zeros is known by what name?' The four possible answers were: A googol, B megatron, C gigabit and D nanomol. Which was correct? Charles Ingram was an entertaining contestant. After every question, he repeated each answer before choosing one. he did the same for the nal question. Just as he nished repeating the word 'googol', a cough was heard. After thinking for several more minutes, Ingram nally said 'I am going to play. Googol' It was the right answer -he was a millionaire! Everyone in the audience applauded; everyone except for another contestant, Graham Whitehurst. While watching, Whitehurst suspected that someone in the studio coughed every time Ingram repeated a correct answer. He identied that person as Tecwen Whittock. Whitehurst contacted the producers of the show and a police investigation was started. After the investigation, Ingram and Whittock were accused of cheating. At the trial, nineteen suspicious coughs were said to have come from the area where Whittock was sitting in the studio. A doctor explained that Whittock had a cough problem and the defence lawyers said many other people coughed during the programme. However, the jury was then told about previous contact between Tecwen Wittock and diana Ingram (Charles Ingram's wife) and Adrian Pollock (his brother-in-low). Whittock regularly went on quiz shows and asked Adrian Pollock and diana Ingram for advice on winning. Both Adrian and Diana were ex-winners on Who Wants To Be A millionaire? Were they exchanging information innocently or as part of a conspiracy? Most of the jury believed it was a conspiracy. The Ingrams and Whittock were ned and nearly sent to prison. Since then, some journalists have questioned what happened in the trial. The Ingrams and Whittock still say they are innocent and that their lives have been ruined. Will Charles Ingram ever receive the money he says he won fairly?
