The Color Run

By: Ashley Schnider
On August 3, UC Davis Circle K-ers had the pleasure of volunteering at the Sacramento Color Run alongside our Lieutenant Governor Luke Tanaka. For those who do not know, in the Color Run race participants wear white to the race, and throughout the race, colored powder is thrown on them until they finish plastered in color. We were assigned to a water station where we tirelessly filled recyclable water cups for the thousands of runners. The purpose of the Color Run, also known as the Happiest 5K on the Planet, is to promote being healthy and happy.

In addition, each Color Run partners with a local charity. The 2013 Sacramento Color Run partnered with Girls on the Run, an organization that uses running to inspire young girls to pursue their dreams and realize their limitless potential. I personally had a great time volunteering and I hope to volunteer for the Color Run again!

At the Livestrong event, not only did we get to cheer on the most enthusiastic group of bikers I have ever met, we also refueled them and directed them back on the right biking path. While many were in it for the exercise and raced against their teammates, others stopped to have conversations with us about their journeys as a biker, and what they encountered during the race. Almost all of the racers, thanked us for our hard work and dedication as volunteers. They were also grateful for all the delicious food our refueling station offered. After the event, the Livestrong organization donated what was left of the perishable food to our club so that we could use it for future events!

Livestrong is an organization founded in 1977 dedicated to making life during cancer easier and making research for a cure a priority in America. The Livestrong Challenge through Davis, CA is an annual event, where participants raise money to help fund research in the search for a cure to cancer.

Run For Your Lives race is an official partner with Kennedy Krieger Foundation. The

AIDS Walk We showed up for a great day of volunteering at the AIDS walk. As volunteers we were in charge of everything from setting up the race, main focus of Kennedy Krieger is on the problems and injuries that affect a childs developing brain. directing the race participants, They have worked with various researchers, physicians, therapists, and educators to help children with giving out water and brain injuries make full or almost full recovery. refreshments, as well as cheering on runners. The 2013 AIDS walk benefited San Francisco AIDS Foundation and HIV/AIDS programs and services throughout the Bay area The AIDS walk helps provide prevention, care, and advocacy programs to thousands of men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS.

FALL WELCOME
September 23rd-27th By: Ashley Schnider
Welcome week is the crucial time of the year where we actively promote Circle K to our fellow students. Because this is also when most other student organizations promote themselves, we have formed the Fall Welcome Week Committee, so that we can focus on planning events for welcome week. This committee consists of board members and general members alike, all of who have an interest in sharing the club that they have come to know and love. The committee is currently planning fundraisers and socials for the week of 9/23-9/27, as well as forming teams to table in the quad throughout the day. If you are interested in joining this committee, join the Facebook group or contact Ryan Tom for more information.

How to: Help welcome members into our club! Circle K has something for everyone, and be sure to show them that something we have! Your ideas is what makes the difference for this week, pour your brains out!

What to do: Dont want to table? ITS OKAY. Help DESIGNING flyers and creating events that appeal to ALL people! Introverts, Extroverts and everyone in between! Cant do beautiful pictures? ITS OKAY. Table and promote club visibility on campus! Wanna meet new people? TOTES, PERF. Chair nightly Welcome Week events from the moment First Years move in , through the beginning of school, and until our First General meeting? This seems like a lot of responsibility? NO WORRIES. If all you can do is help plan just chair one event thats totally okay! That is more than enough!

How to Chair Events

Have you ever wanted to demonstrate leadership within the club? A stepping stone to being a board member? Take the opportunity to chair an event! The event can be weekly or it can be a one time. If you do want to chair an event you should contact the current chair or any board member and let them know. It is just that simple !!! Note: When chairing an event be sure to arrive early and prepared to record the times members show up.

Cerf-ing
When you chair events you will have to fill out a Cerf. The Cerf document is available on the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/3624100 40545125/408026185983510/ ) You can always ask any board member for the form as well. When you chair an event it is very important that you fill out this form as accurately as possible and send it into Melanie (melwong.cki@gmail.com) and Sam (samcarey.cki@gmail.com).

Summer Socials
July 4th Social
Lured by the potluck and rumors of spectacular fireworks, Circle Kers, came out to Davis annual July 4th fireworks show! For many of those who showed up, this would be their first July 4th away from home, and were comforted by the fact that they would be surrounded by their friends from CKI. The fireworks did not disappoint! They were big, bright, and at some points unbelievably close to the audience. It was definitely a night we will never forget. Snaps to Nathan Espirtu and Ashley Pestano for setting up and planning all of our socials so far. I cant wait to see what else you guys have in store for us.

Despicable Me 2 Social

MINONS GALORE. ARRIBA! At this social CKI-ers gathered together and took advantage of the $5 Tuesday movie special in Davis to watch Gru and his crew( it rhymes!) once again save the world. This time Gru works with the Anti Villain league to find out who stole a secret laboratory that was located near the Arctic Circle. Although there are moments of intense action, there is a happy ever after.

Turbo Social
Fitting in with the theme of the movie, Turbo, about a snail with an insatiable appetite for speed, this social took place at a drive in. Combing our love for cars, speed racing, and animation, the CKI fleet took off, drifting and racing (within the speed limit of course) to the drive in. It was a new and wonderful experience to have the movie experience, in the comfort of your very own car.
